About Us
Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association is a not-for-profit cooperative that supplies wholesale power to its member systems. The organization is based in Westminster, Colorado, and serves a diverse range of rural electric cooperatives and public power districts across four states: Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming. As a cooperative, it is owned by the members it serves, which allows for a unique governance structure focused on the needs and interests of its members.
In terms of sustainability, Tri-State has made significant strides in transitioning towards renewable energy sources. The cooperative has committed to reducing its carbon emissions and increasing its renewable energy portfolio. It has announced plans to retire several coal-fired power plants and replace them with cleaner energy sources, including wind and solar power. Tri-State has also set ambitious goals to increase its renewable energy capacity, aiming for a 50% renewable energy mix by 2024.
Tri-State's sustainability efforts are further supported by its participation in various environmental and energy efficiency programs. The cooperative is involved in initiatives to promote energy conservation and efficiency among its members, helping to reduce overall energy consumption and carbon footprint. Additionally, Tri-State is working on enhancing its transmission infrastructure to better integrate renewable energy sources into the grid.
While Tri-State has made progress in its sustainability journey, it continues to face challenges related to balancing energy reliability, affordability, and environmental responsibility. The cooperative's ongoing efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy future are crucial for meeting the evolving energy needs of its members and contributing to broader environmental goals.
