The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN is committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations, achieving international cooperation, and being a center for harmonizing the actions of nations.

Sustainability at United Nations

The United Nations is deeply committed to sustainability and has numerous initiatives and programs aimed at promoting sustainable development globally. The UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership.

  • The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative based on CEO commitments to implement universal sustainability principles and to take steps to support UN goals.
