TITLE: BIOLOGIST III (GROUSE)

RATE OF PAY: $24.96 - $35.00 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:
This position will be responsible for developing the reintroduction project for Columbia Sharp-Tailed Grouse on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The position will be responsible for conducting habitat surveys and assessments to identify suitable habitats for the reintroduction efforts. The position will require you to work with Federal, State and Tribal entities to acquire birds for the reintroduction efforts. This position will be responsible for planning and implementing the project by providing management recommendations to the Wildlife Program Manager while using the Tribe's multidisciplinary approach for Natural Resource Management.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop data collection methods and protocols
- Complete habitat assessments
- Capture and trans-locate Columbia Sharp-Tailed Grouse
- Conduct radio telemetry surveys for radio marked Sharp-tailed grouse
- Locate and monitor individual animals via ground and air surveys. Retrieve collars from mortalities and determines cause of mortality
- Locate and monitor nests, determine success and, if failed, determine cause
- Locate and monitor broods and determines if successfully fledge
- Collect biological data; codes, classifies, and enters data into computer using Microsoft Office software and ArcMap. Use logic, knowledge of the project area, and established quality control methods, evaluates data for completeness, reasonableness, reliability, accuracy, consistency, and comparability with other data. Identify questionable data and edits or updates as needed. Provide periodic reports and updates to the Department and public.
- Participate/assist in all aspects of habitat management and restoration projects including review projects and assess potential impacts to wildlife and their habitats.
- Supervise Wildlife Technicians, and this position will occasionally have contact with and/or control over children as part of their job duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must be able to work in pairs or small group, in rugged terrain, in remote areas.
- Knowledge of Sharp-Tailed Grouse or similar species
- Knowledge of wildlife habitat relationships
- Knowledge of wildlife survey and capture methods
- Experience in data collection, recording, and validation
- Ability to communicate effectively with verbal and written instructions and work with co-workers, tribal programs, general public and other agencies
- Must be able to work with diverse cultural, professional, and interdisciplinary teams
- Must be willing to work extended hours, nights, holidays, and weekends as needed
- Ability to effectively and efficiently manage budgets
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, zoology, natural resources, or related field of study and 2 years of relative experience
- Valid driver's license and a good driving record for insurance purposes
