Job DescriptionProvides Horticultural management and direction to Island Operations programs and physical properties with a focus on Mānele and Hōkūao as well as portions of Kōʻele Project District including Malanai Estates, Lānaʻi Adventure Park and Cavendish Golf Course.
Salary: $95,000-$115,000
Reporting Relationship: Reports to: Director of Island Operations
Supervises: Nursery and Landscaping staff
Interfaces with: - Landscape Architects, Landscape Construction Contractors, Pūlama Lānaʻi Development and Construction Management team.
- Pūlama Lānaʻi Art Conservation Department.
- Pūlama Lānaʻi Natural Resource Conservation Division and others departments as needed

ResponsibilitiesEssential Duties - Applies horticultural knowledge to continue the high level of standards across the entire and associated portfolio of Pulama Lanai properties.
- Supports all Pūlama Lānaʻi Landscape operations with horticultural expertise, staff training and developing departmental mastery of horticultural best practices.
- Provides guidance to staff using proper methods and procedures for installing and maintaining landscaping projects.
- Works closely with Nursery Manager to help plans and evaluate all horticultural activities within the nursery environment, including the selection of plants to be propagated and grown, treatments for the control of pests, upkeep of material and operations.
- Diagnosis of plant physiological problems caused by insects and diseases; develops and implements treatments following an Integrated Pest Management Program.
- Works in support of the Director of Island Operations with annual landscape operating budget and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance.
- Determines annual plant needs; purchases plants, fertilizers, chemicals and other supplies for Nursery and other landscape projects.
- Writes specifications for supplies, services, materials and equipment, contacts potential vendors to obtain price quotes, prepares cost estimates and purchase requisitions for accepted bids.
- Trains, schedules and directs staff in planting, transplanting, chemical application and maintenance of plants within Island Operations nurseries and specific landscape properties.
- Is hands on in work and leads by example.
- Develops cohesive work group and promotes professionalism and harmony in the workplace.
- Supports and executes the Mission, Vision and Values of Pūlama Lānaʻi.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QualificationsQualification/Requirements: - Three to five years of experience and knowledge of techniques and principals used in horticultural activities, including practices to promote plant health, with proper plant nutrition, and use of pesticides (when required) to control plant pests.
- BS Degree in Horticulture or Botany.
- Previous supervisory experience required.
- Knowledge of regulations governing pesticide application, landscape construction, horticultural practices, irrigation systems, maintenance, chemical pesticides and insect control.
- Knowledge and experience growing and maintaining tropical, ornamental plants within a world class hotel and grounds.
- Skills in the use of landscaping tools and equipment.
- Must be proficient in Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Requires excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
- Requires relating to people in a friendly and professional manner.
- Works in accordance with established procedures and maintains reliable work attendance.
- Requires verbal communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to think and make effective decisions quickly.
- Ability to create effective working relationships with employees.
- Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and work under pressure.
Required Work Cards/Certifications: - Valid Hawaii Driver's License
- Must have or acquire a State of Hawaii Restricted-Use Pesticide Applicators License within the first year of employment.
Physical Requirements: - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, and color vision.
- The employee is occasionally required to operate objects, tools, or controls.
