Job DescriptionThis position is open to all Applicants. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Delta Junction!What you will be doing:Under the general supervision of the Delta Area Wildlife Biologist, this position serves as the manager for the Delta Junction Bison Range, with primary responsibilities for development and implementation of habitat management and enhancement plans. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting with planning, developing, coordinating, conducting, and evaluating complex management programs for big game, small game, furbearers, and other species in Game Management Unit 20D. Management of bison, moose, caribou, sheep, bears, wolves, furbearers, and small game are all part of normal duties.

The working conditions you can expect:This position is located in Delta Junction, Alaska, a small community of approximately 1,000 people situated at the junction of the Alaska Highway and Richardson Highway. The office has a total staff of 4-6 people, which includes both wildlife and fisheries personnel. Duties vary day to day, including planning habitat improvement projects, managing contracts and purchasing, operating farm equipment on the bison range, interacting with the public, flying aerial wildlife surveys, attending public advisory committee meetings, data entry or working on reports in the office, responding to nuisance wildlife calls, and working in the field either on the Delta Junction Bison Range or remotely for other wildlife field projects. The area also offers exceptional opportunities to pursue a variety of outdoor activities on personal time.
- This position requires field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying in airplanes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.
- This position routinely travels to remote areas for field work that could last from a day to a week.

- Experience implementing habitat enhancement or manipulation programs, including the use of agricultural techniques to benefit wildlife.
- Experience planning and conducting aerial wildlife surveys and capture projects using drugs and animal capture equipment; including collecting, analyzing, archiving, and reporting data, flying in small aircraft and coordinating logistics for remote fieldwork.
- Experience working with the public, especially hunters and trappers, with a variety of personality types, including angry or upset individuals and preparing presentations for public meetings.
- Experience preparing, formatting, writing, and editing management reports, scientific papers, or management plans for wildlife species.

Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
