Position Description:
Aquatic Habitat and Access interns will work along with the aquatic habitat and access staff to help develop, maintain, and improve aquatic habitat and access for public fishing access areas in Western South Dakota. This internship will provide experience in the maintenance, development, and management of public fishing access areas. Duties may include GIS mapping, noxious weed control, boundary posting, pre/post-management vegetation monitoring, dock and pier repair, stream work, aquatic noxious weed data entry/analysis, and boating and shoreline fishing access maintenance to include small boat ramp work. Other duties as assigned may include assisting with the wildlife and fisheries population surveys, light construction projects, and working with local GFP staff on various access and fisheries habitat projects.
Candidates must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Candidate must be able to operate a UTV and 4-wheel drive pickup and trailer, as well as power tools and equipment. Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and work on shoreline terrain. Individual will work with a team at times as well as independently.
Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to pass SD Commercial Applicators licensing through DANR. Must be able to pass ATV/UTV safety courses provided.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
