Interns will work on bringing recently donated historical specimens and associated distributional data to their full state of utility, through proper specimen and data curation. The specimens will be added to the NCMNS collection, and the associated metadata will be published to global repositories. Proper curation of these specimens and supplying global accessibility of the associated data while ensuring its accuracy is critical in providing a more comprehensive picture of the historical biodiversity of our state. Major Task to be Performed: Working alongside collections experts, the interns will learn all aspects of curation (specimen stabilization, data digitization, and global accessibility). The interns will utilize protocols, workflows, relational databases, and various mapping software programs. Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: The final products will include fully incorporating recently donated material into the NCMNS Fish Collection and providing globally accessible research ready data on fish biodiversity for use by researchers, educators, conservation managers, and the public. Additionally, the interns will be afforded the ability to share what they learned during their internship via an outreach activity. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2025. Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program. To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed. Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship.
