GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Sea Garden Manager-Environmental Specialist Trainee, Will develop and manage all aspects of a sea gardens-restoration of a Clam garden at Ankau. Monitoring Ocean Acidification (weekly) Monitoring HAB (weekly), assisting in intertidal shellfish biomass assessment, field work schedule revolves around tides, river and weather conditions and may not always occur during typical business hours. Specialists may travel into the field with equipment up to 50 lbs. Will conduct Sea Garden Traditional Ecological Knowledge interviews for the sea garden. The trainee will be trained in all aspects of the position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Will be trained to assist with office Computer organization, reports, newsletters as well as pre-field and post-field organizing for Daily field work, including but not limited to:
- Responsible for coordination with project partners, ordering all supplies, assist with surveys, data entry and analysis and assist with outreach support, scheduling pre-field and post-field organizing for Harmful Algae Bloom Monitoring, Shellfish sampling events, shipping out all samples in a timely manner.
- Sampling kit preparations, notification to lab and filling out appropriate paperwork. And enter raw data into Microsoft excel database.
- Field/sample gear organizing and maintenance using checklists and logs. coordinating field work schedule and transportation logistics.
- Will Interview Elders, about environmental questions, such as past Sea Gardens in the Yakutat area.
- Other duties as assigned, which may include but not limited to water quality field testing
- Attending relevant trainings
NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective written and oral communicator, with the ability to interact with diverse stakeholders, including elders, staff, community members, and regulatory agencies
- Strong attention to detail. Good record-keeping, good organizational computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, d, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Experience working in moving water, bear habitat, increment weather able to work flexible hours at times of scheduled field work that may take place on weekends, early mornings, or late evenings according tides
- Knowledge of safe ATV operational use preferred
- Ability to carry 50 lbs. for extended periods of time
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and *Ability to work as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Effective communication skills
- A willingness to work flexible hours and travel occasionally as needed.
Candidates will be shown preference who:
- Are working towards, or have/want to acquire a Bachelors or Masters degree in an environmentally related field.
- Have experience living and/or working outdoors in Southeast Alaska.
- Have experience with safe ATV and safe jetboat or skiff operational use.
- Have experience walking around in or working in moving water.
- Reside or have the ability to procure housing in Yakutat: this is not a remote position
