Position Summary
This position serves as the assistant bear and cougar specialist in the Bureau of Wildlife Management under the supervision of the Wildlife Species Section Supervisor. This position works directly with the Large Carnivore Specialist and coordinates and collaborates with internal and external partners and tribes to accomplish large carnivore program objectives.
50% Assist with administration of the bear management program including: providing support to the department's bear advisory committee, reviewing and reporting annual bear license drawing results and wait times, coordinating annual communications with bear license awardees and age results, recording public bear observations and health reports, coordinating bear first harvest certificates and develop status and biological reports on bear biology or management activities as needed.
25% Monitor review and respond to public reports of cougars including those submitted to the Wildlife Observation database. Follow up with submitters as needed. Coordinate verification of cougar reports including site visits or genetic sampling as warranted. Ensure data integrity and develop summary report as requested.
15% Assist with department bear research efforts including winter bear den surveys.
10% Assist with other large carnivore program priorities and activities including winter carnivore tracking surveys and wolf trapping activities. Other duties as assigned by supervisor or lead worker.
Salary Information
This position pays $20.65 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 15-04. Compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and will not automatically lead to permanent state employment or be entitled to the same benefits as permanent employees.

1) Residency: To be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.
A Wisconsin resident is a person who:
a. Has established a residence, as defined in s. 6.10(1), in this state not less than 10 days earlier;
b. Has resided in this state for not less than a total of one year out of the immediately preceding 5 years;
c. Is eligible to register to vote in this state; or
d. Is the spouse of a person meeting the requirements of par. (a), (b), or (c)." s.230.03(12), Wis. Stats.

Qualifications
Required:
- Knowledge of wildlife population dynamics, habitat management, harvest management, and survey methodology
- Excellent customer service and oral and written communication skills
- College-level course work or experience in conservation biology, wildlife biology, natural resources management, environmental science or similar fields
Preferred:
- Knowledge of bear hunting practices and behaviors and human/bear conflicts
- Knowledge of cougar ecology and management
- Experience working with mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS suite), databases (e.g., Access, Oracle, etc.) and data analysis languages (e.g., R, SQL, etc.)
