The Karen M Swindler Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) at South Dakota Mines seeks a Chemical Engineering Equipment and Instrumentation Specialist.
The primary role of this Specialist is to provide technical (installation, maintenance, and operation) and instructional (assistance to students with setup and operation) support of the undergraduate chemical engineering Unit Operations Laboratories. These labs operate pilot-scale chemical/bioprocessing equipment, including automated distillation and gas absorption columns, multi-effect evaporators, reactors and fermenters, heat exchangers, and pumps. Supporting instrumentation for these labs includes MS PC based DAQ/control, in-situ UV-Vis, gas chromatography, HPLC, and online gas sensors. A secondary role is to provide technical support for research labs and training of graduate students; research instrumentation includes DSC/TGA, GC-MS, and other analytical instruments. The ability to write grants for new instructional and research equipment and instrumentation is desirable.
A bachelor's degree is required, preferably in chemical engineering. A candidate with a master's degree in chemical engineering is preferred to lead instruction of UO laboratory courses. The candidate should be enthusiastic about engineering education and have the ability to repair and operate process equipment, associated instrumentation, and related electronic/mechanical systems. Additional desired skills include computer and process control programming, excellent communication, and the ability to manage and perform multiple tasks.
The desired start time is April 2025.
The CBE Department has a tradition of excellence in process-oriented education in chemical engineering, producing quality graduates who are sought by industry and top graduate programs. CBE resides in a remodeled $25MM Chemical and Biological Engineering and Chemistry (CBEC) building, which offers state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, including a 3,000 sq. ft. pilot-scale unit operations laboratory. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees, and it is currently home to about 140 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students.
