Position DescriptionWork on the back of trucks to complete daily routes to collect and empty trash or recycling carts, collection of vegetative debris by emptying bags and cans or using a pitch fork, disposal of metal, electronics or large household items such as furniture or construction debris that does not fit in a trash cart and delivery and repair of trash and recycling carts. Work assignments are made on a daily basis where needed. After collection has been completed crews will dispose of debris at the appropriate site by using the trucks automated ejection system. Other duties may include removal and replacing trash bags from public receptacles and assisting solid waste operators or workers when needed. Workers are expected to help operators safely back up trucks, complete daily pre-trip & post trip truck inspections and keep vehicles cleaned and well maintained.
The City offers great training opportunities for career development and advancement through onsite and offsite training. Many of our Recycling & Trash Services Workers earn their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) while working and are promoted up to an Operator/Driver!
Recycling & Trash Services Workers are required to work most City holidays and support cleanup efforts for City sponsored events and festivals. This positions is also considered essential and may be required to work before, during and after inclement weather events. Typical TasksCollects and empties trash, waste, and recycling by performing the following duties: pulling carts from the curb, placing carts on tipper, activating tipper to dump cart, activating packing system, removing carts from tipper, returning cart to curb and pick up loose vegetation.
Assists the driver with cleaning of truck by removing trash from inside cab, using a pressure washer and brush to clean the truck and performing other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: Ability to read and write at a minimum of the 8th grade level of education.
Other Requirements:
- Experience and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to obtain FEMA independent study course certificate within 60 days of hire
- Ability to comply with written and oral instructions.
- Computer skills necessary for training and record keeping.
- This position is considered essential in times of emergency or natural disaster and is required to work most City-sponsored events and festivals and City observed holidays.
This position is required to undergo a post-offer drug screen and pre-employment physical. Supplemental Information Physical Demands:Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly. Ability to lift 75 lbs for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions:This position works primarily in a vehicle and outdoors.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.
Retirement: - NC Local Government Retirement System -All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

Deferred Compensation - The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to a 401(k) plan regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the 401(k) or 457 deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*): - Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
- Holidays - 13 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
*Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
