Job DescriptionThis position is open to Department Employees only.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Habitat is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 4 located in Soldotna!What you will be doing:The successful applicant will be responsible for the following activities: processing Title 16 Fish Habitat and Special Area Permits for the Kenai Peninsula; performing field reviews and compliance actions for activities authorized under Fish Habitat and Special Area Permits; reviewing forestry activities; documenting field work with trip and/or technical reports; preparing and tracking office budget; hiring/supervising of biologist/admin personnel, reviewing projects which may alter fish and wildlife and their habitat, and reviewing and signing all outgoing correspondence. Field and office work are major components of this position and you will be working with applicants, state and federal agencies, and the Kenai Peninsula Borough.

Accordingly, the incumbent will be responsible for documenting and evaluating both predevelopment and ongoing biological conditions at various sites throughout the Kenai Peninsula. The incumbent may conduct applied research to identify ways to minimize impacts of development projects on fish and wildlife and their habitats and pursue opportunities to enhance and protect habitat in cooperation with other agencies and organizations. This position provides the opportunity to review and authorize a wide variety of projects including placer mining, culvert and bridge installations, water withdrawals, stream crossings, streambank restoration/stabilization, and a myriad of activities in Special Areas.
The working conditions you can expect:The Habitat office in Soldotna is in the KPB Donald E. Gilman Kenai River Center building, within walking distance of the Kenai River. The Kenai Peninsula offers numerous recreational opportunities including access to both marine and freshwater fishing, hunting, hiking, and cross-country trails.
Specific Requirements The successful candidate must have a valid Alaska driver's license. Required training, which may be completed on the job, include: peace officer of the state deputization; department firearms and wildlife safety; wilderness first aid, CPR, and AED. Additional training opportunities may include introduction to ArcPro; remote worker swift water safety; water ditching and survival; and electrofishing.
Field work is an important component of the job, including monitoring construction projects, fish sampling of a waterbody, or habitat observations/trip report prior to, during, or after a development activity.

- Strong working knowledge of the life histories and habitat requirements of anadromous and freshwater fishes in Alaska.
- The ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.

- The ability to make reasonable and practicable decisions relative to resource development projects.
- Demonstrated experience assessing fish and wildlife habitat/mitigation in relation to human disturbance.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of advanced professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
