Duties & Responsibilities SummaryVCU Facilities Management is seeking to hire a
Zero Waste Program Manager for
VCU Sustainability.
The
Zero Waste Program Manager is responsible for holistically approaching campus waste management in all its forms. This includes stewarding VCU's existing waste reduction initiatives and strategies, as well as working collaboratively to identify new opportunities to reduce waste on campus. With guidance from VCU Sustainability staff and other campus stakeholders, the Program Manager will work to address issues such as waste from student move-out, recycling and composting challenges, food recovery, and laboratory waste. The Program Manager will also support campus and community partnerships that center waste reduction, as well as handle zero waste-related communications.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):Program Management and Planning- Work with internal and external stakeholders, including VCU's compost vendor and custodial company, to maintain effective single-stream recycling and composting to reduce waste on campus
- Manage daily operations of the VCU Free Store including supervising Free Store interns, coordinating donation drives, and facilitating donations from student move-out
- Collaborate with VCU Athletics to identify feasible opportunities to reduce waste at athletic events
- Identify opportunities to pilot specialty recycling and/or reuse programs on campus (e.g. textile reuse, e-waste recycling)
- Work towards goals identified in existing zero waste strategic planning documents and build upon the strategies as appropriate
- Work with the VCU Sustainability Data Analyst to present waste data in a compelling format
Communications and Engagement- With VCU Sustainability staff and the Communication & Engagement intern team, create educational resources aimed at improving utilization of VCU Free Store, single-stream recycling and other relevant campus programs
- Plan and host events, workshops and volunteer opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community members
- Present information about zero waste initiatives to faculty members, student organizations, university departments and other groups that express interest in participating in program activities; advise these groups as needed on how they can most effectively contribute to zero waste activities on campus
- Represent VCU Sustainability's zero waste efforts at campus events
- Provide content including photos, videos, and text related to VCU Sustainability waste reduction efforts for the departmental website, social media accounts and publications
- Serve as the primary contact for inquiries about zero waste initiatives at VCU
External Community Outreach- Develop and maintain relationships with external program partners
- Support local organizations by utilizing VCU resources and outreach capabilities to coordinate volunteer efforts and other activities that support the organizations' programmatic efforts
- Build awareness about efforts and events in Richmond involving waste reduction, creative reuse, e-waste recycling and other zero waste-related topics
Other duties as assigned- Contribute to the other departmental efforts on an as-needed basis, including sustainability reporting commitments
Qualifications Minimum Hiring Standards- Willingness to learn new skills and information related to the position's responsibilities

- Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to interact with a wide variety of constituencies, including co-workers, students, business and community leaders, partners, volunteers, public officials, and the public at large, in a wide variety of settings
- Ability to effectively plan, prioritize and problem solve while managing multiple projects and priorities
- Excellent organizational skills
- Valid Driver's License
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards- Bachelor's degree in sustainability, environmental studies, supply chain management, or a related academic discipline
- Professional experience in one or more of the following fields: waste management, university operations or sustainability planning
- Demonstrated professional project management or program implementation experience
