Job DescriptionThe senior controls engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and maintaining equipment which monitors and controls BHE Renewables' solar and battery units plant logic, SCADA and control systems, and engineering systems. Ensures that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. Requires a thorough understanding of the operational processes and demonstrates familiarity with instrumentation, telecommunications, meteorological and solar arrays, programmable logic controllers (PLC), and human machine interface (HMI) programming of control systems within the solar and battery storage power plants. Maintains compliance with all company and regulatory compliance requirements. Directs, coordinates and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration and completion of electrical engineering projects of varying size and complexity.
Responsibilities- Ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of control and measurement systems at the Santa Margarita and Rosamond solar and battery facilities. Provide support to plant operations in daily control problems, continuous process improvements, and remote equipment monitoring. Design and implement new control systems. Test, maintain and modify existing systems to achieve greatest productivity for solar and battery generation plants.
- Identify and incorporate new ideas and technologies for project development. Recommend economically viable projects to management based on informed, data-based decisions. Manage assigned capital projects by performing the following: understanding the technology involved, performing management of change requests, working with supply chain on developing a requests for proposal, performing project estimates, writing authorizations for expenditures to acquire project funds, purchasing required equipment, developing all pertinent drawings, etc. Initiate, implement and complete project work as assigned or otherwise. Manage all costs incurred in the project, keeping scope changes and overruns under control.
- Reviews process and equipment design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and contract requirements and specifications. Analyze data and write technical reports and recommendations. Prepare control system basis of analysis and design documents.
- Provide technical and consultancy support on instrumentation and controls system and project activities for maintenance, operations, engineering and procurement. Maintain close contact with pertinent stakeholders to evaluate plant equipment performance, recommend design and specification improvements, trend project performance, and keep up to date with the technology incorporated in the field.
- Provide input into major overhaul planning and scheduling contract services, and project activities. Assist in preparing annual capital and expense budgets and developing new business proposals
- Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or engineering with equivalent instrumentation and controls system experience required. (Six years of progressive and relevant experience required for candidates who do not possess a bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics engineering.)
- Eight or more years of related controls engineering experience.
- Must have knowledge of various types of electrical and instrumentation uses and devices. Knowledge of low, medium and high voltage electrical applications. Knowledge of asset and work maintenance systems and general knowledge of technology applications and equipment.
- Must be well versed in HMI (human machine interface) programming.
- Must be able to handle rapidly shifting priorities and multiple projects concurrently.
- Must have critical thinking and decision-making skills to develop and present technical recommendations; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; and be able to resolve complex problems under stressful situations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills to work closely with field teams and other customers and coordinate work with other appropriate technical resources.
- Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical process control.
- Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
- This position will require considerable travel between two solar sites (Santa Margarita, CA and Rosamond, CA)
- A valid California driver's license is required.
