Job Description: Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Environmental Health and Safety Manager (FA314). The selected candidate will lead the university community in fostering and sustaining a culture that reduces injuries and accidents, minimizes environmental impact, and maximizes compliance with environmental health and safety regulations. The selected candidate will also develop, manage, and coordinate university-wide environmental health and safety programs while providing support to university departments and other internal constituencies in the development and delivery of programs tailored to their specific needs. Furthermore, the candidate will identify and recommend solutions related to environmental health, workplace & residential safety, and regulatory compliance risks across the university. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, an emergency, staff shortage, etc.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Manage the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
- Develop and implement environmental health and occupational safety policies, procedures, programs, and systems to promote a healthy and safe working and living environment.
- Routinely review and assess university-controlled facilities for environmental health, life safety, occupational safety, fire safety, and residential safety hazards and risks.
- Routinely audit university compliance with occupational health and safety, environmental quality, fire, and other life-safety regulations applicable to the university.
- Coordinate the testing and maintenance of university life-safety systems.
- Oversee the university's hazardous materials programs.
- Develop and conduct environmental health and occupational safety training programs.
- Respond to and investigate environmental, environmental health, occupational safety, and residential safety incidents, reporting findings and making recommendations for action.
- Provide support to emergent incidents and emergency operations as the university's lead safety officer.
- May be required to work extended or irregular hours and be available for on-call.
Job Requirements: - Bachelor's degree required with significant training and related experience; Master's degree in Safety, Environmental Studies, or related field strongly preferred.
- A demonstrated record of progressive experience managing comprehensive environmental health and occupational safety programs at comparably sized educational institutions or businesses.
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other local, state, and federal regulations and recommended standards.
- Ability to interact with a broad constituency to resolve disputes and solve problems is required.
- Must be able to work under the following conditions: moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises; some exposure to hazards or physical risks; and moderate to strenuous physical activity.
- Must be able, if necessary, to work extended or irregular hours and be available for on call.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience in residential higher education settings.
- Skill in training and investigative techniques related to environmental health and occupational safety issues.
- Professional Certifications (CSP, CHMM, ASP, etc.)
Additional Information:This is a full-time, administrative and professional faculty, exempt position. A successful fingerprint based criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
