Description
In support of NAC's Just Cause, the new role of sustainability manager will merge a philosophical curiosity for creating a more humane world with the technical prowess to assist teams in executing sustainable solutions firm wide. The human impact on earth is the most important issue of the 21st century. NAC holds an impactful role in this work as authors of the built environment. Working to substantially create positive and optimistic interventions in the built environment will be the charge of this new role within NAC.

Requirements
Qualifications / Background- A degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a degree specific to sustainability, with a focus on the built environment.
- Familiar with issues of sustainability within the built environment and the delivery systems and schedules of the architectural process.
- Experience leading the sustainability measures of projects and their teams through successful pursuits of objective rating systems such as LEED, Phius, WELL, or LBC while simultaneously offering the creative and resourceful guidance needed to find the most innovative solutions;.
- Balanced skillset between high level conceptual planning/guidance and knowledge of the micro level of detailing to ensure execution is successful;.
- Connected to industry leaders in sustainability and participant in organizations shaping the future of this work.
Time CommitmentFull time position with approximate split of time as follows:
- Months 0-6:
- 50% on firm-wide efforts including thought leadership, education, research, outward promotion, implementing best practices, building culture, and operations carbon accounting.
- 50% on project-specific work - potential to be split based on current need between being a primary team member on any given project or sustainability champion on many projects.
- Months 7 onward:
- 25% on firm-wide efforts
- 75% on project-specific work (including marketing)
Responsibilities
- Provide overall firm-wide guidance and direction to achieve the vision, strategies and tactics outlined in the updated Sustainability Strategic Plan. Provide overall firm-wide guidance and direction on overarching targets with sustainability as a focus.
- Craft firm goals for project performance independent of project requirements or client expectations. Goals shall be measurable and incrementally improved towards carbon neutrality. Implement project guidance/procedures to ensure all projects are actively pursuing those goals.
- Manage and implement systems for analyzing data, assessing our sustainability performance, and making data transparent to the firm. Utilize data collected to inform improvements to performance on future projects.
- Organize education to increase the collective knowledge of sustainability across the firm. Build a culture of stewardship that will extend beyond office walls.
- Guide NAC to become a firm who is known not only for design excellence but as a firm who pushes the envelope for sustainable vision.
- Have an aptitude and inclination to raise the conversation around sustainability through events, networking, conferences, and symposiums.
- Participate in and contribute to the AIA's LFRT Sustainability committee. Build NAC's knowledge and advocacy to become a voice within the industry's leading sustainability experts.
- Contribute to marketing and business development efforts firm-wide - identifying potential projects and aiding in their pursuit.
- Work with each physical office to reform our office procedures to be more sustainable, including but not limited to carbon accounting and daily office operations.
- Work with each department to improve performance from a sustainable lens, including but not limited to Finance, HR, Marketing, RED, and Technology.
- Work with the Design Department and Design Responsibility team to reconnect great design and sustainable design to ensure that it is never one or the other but both.

Work Environment- Primarily in-person work environment from one of NAC's four offices.
- Occasional travel to other offices to engage and strengthen sustainable practices.
- Flexible work policy available as needed
Salary Description
$120,000 - 160,000
