POSITION SUMMARY:The Director of Energy Management and Infrastructure collaborates with each hospital Facilities Director across the Boston Medical Center Health to identify energy efficiency project and program opportunities. The Director will report to the Senior Director, Facilities Operations, BMCHS.
Position: Director, Energy Management & Infrastructure Department: Plant OperationsSchedule: Full TimeLocation: Onsite & Visits to BMC PropertiesESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:The Director works with third-party utilities and consortia to identify potential energy efficiency incentive programs from which compelling energy savings projects can be derived. The Director develops business plans, operating budgets, negotiates contracts and arrangements with third-party utilities and ultimately directs all phases of resulting, approved energy efficiency projects and programs. The Director presents project recommendations and business cases to the Energy Leadership Committee for approval and direction. Once approved, the Director oversees projects to completion, in accordance BMCHS standards and periodically reports on resulting costs/ benefits.
Work Performed:- Utilize procurement and hedging strategies for all sites
- High value energy speculation (solar, fuel cells, geo-thermal, etc.)
- Initiating partnerships with the Utilities to develop new incentive-based projects
- Collaborate with local utility providers to develop incentive rates for "one off" projects
- Responsible for the City Building Emissions Reduction Disclosure (BERDO) Reporting for Boston & Brighton campuses
- Liaison with Dept. of Energy and Energy Star for all properties
- Directly manages the execution of small to medium energy and water efficiency projects throughout all campuses. Periodically serve as project manager for select central plant and utility infrastructure projects.
- Develops business cases and writes project narratives to request funding for energy, water and sustainability projects. Where applicable develops proposals to solicit consultant/contractor pricing, and statements of work. Develops pay back calculations, cashflow modeling and draws upon relevant energy and building systems data and metrics to support project recommendations.
- Manages multiple energy conservation and retro-commissioning projects at different phases ensuring projects are on schedule and within budget while meeting or exceeding short and long-term savings projections.
- Establishes project and program milestones continuously develops KPI's to measure program success; monitors adherence to program plans and schedules; identifies program problems and obtains solutions
- In collaboration with Facilities Directors, identifies and assesses problem / opportunity areas within BMCHS facilities infrastructure that could benefit from energy efficiency measures and evaluates options.
Responsibilities:- Analyzes complex data from accounting and facility information systems and is a key contributor of business requirements supporting the Division's capital technology program strategies which include the augmentation of systems, data, and processes that enable transparency in the measurement and management of energy usage, carbon footprint operating efficiencies.
- Participate in ASHRAE audits of select facilities and strategic building systems and assets as directed by Facilities and Business Operations leadership.
- Support the Sustainability Department with the preparation and reporting on project progress as it relates to University's comprehensive Energy, Utility, and Carbon Neutrality Plan and related programs and strategies.
- Oversees the Utility Bill Management Team to build and augment automated energy efficiency reporting including the build-out of BMCHS performance data in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Participate in reviews of utility and sub-meter data and processes enabling increased automation of data flows into our Utility Bill Management System
- Together with the Sr. Energy Analyst, prepare energy, water, and emissions performance reports using Excel, PowerPoint, Maximo and Tableau and Enel X. Perform data management, baseline creation, benchmarking, and analysis using these and other industry references. Prepare charts, graphs, and other visualizations to support project business cases and program progress.
- Manage the incoming requests to use funds from the Energy Revolving Fund. Ensure all incentive checks, rebates, and payback strategies are being allocated to the fund. Prepare narratives for projects that may require supplemental funding or alternative funding sources that exceed or do not fully qualify to use revolving energy reserve funds.
- Assist the Senior Director, as needed, to prepare monthly, quarterly and annual utilities budgets and allocations for each campus.
- Work closely with the Business Process Optimization team to automate work order creation associated with faults and alarms within MEP controls systems and any 3rd party analytics software.
- Maintain accurate records of time spent on each project.
JOB REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION:Bachelor's degree required
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:CEM, LEED, CPM professional designations a preferred
EXPERIENCE:- Seven to ten years of experience in construction management, building operations, engineering, environmental science or equivalent field required
- Project management experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio required.
- Working knowledge of Enel, Energy Star Portfolio Manager and/or comparable energy modeling software tools.
- Knowledge of utility accounting and facility information systems; and how to utilize these systems for analyzing, measuring, and reporting required.
- Working knowledge of existing buildings, facility management, active systems, MEPD, and architectural systems required.
- Knowledge and experience in energy efficiency and/or sustainability programs required.
- Agility to evaluate a wide variety of building MEP system.
- Working knowledge of controls systems and cloud-based energy analytics
- Exceptionally strong written and verbal communications skills
