Duties SummaryWildlife Biologist III: Independently performs a limited range of professional wildlife research, development, or management assignments; plans census and surveys of game species; collects, compiles and analyzes hunter use and kill data; independently conducts smaller wildlife research, development and management projects; may direct the work of lower-level professional and non-professional wildlife workers; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Wildlife Biologist IV: Independently performs the full range of wildlife research development and management activities; directs the work of lower-level professional and non-professional wildlife workers; and performs other related duties as assigned.
This position performs work in the management, conservation, development, and protection of wildlife resources and in related scientific research by implementing priority tasks pursuant to the Division's wildlife management goals and objectives. Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to planning, development, and maintenance of Hawaiian goose (Nene) sanctuaries, and other habitat projects that may include other Threatened & Endangered species.
Who we are: The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife manages state Forest Reserves, Natural Area Reserves, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Game Management Areas, and Public Hunting Areas. Program areas include forestry, wildlife, trails and access, and natural area reserves. The State's wildlife program is concerned with the conservation, development, and management of the wildlife resources of the State on a sound basis so that maximum sustained benefits will accrue to the people of the State. The broad objectives and functions or the program are to obtain information through research, surveys and inventories on the life history, ecology, and the range and habitat requirements of the species in Hawaii to regulate the hunting and other environmental factors affecting the various game and non-game species to maintain the maximum or optimum populations compatible with the carrying capacity of the ranges. This includes the evaluation of habitats and the wildlife resources thereon or potentially supportable, discovery and interpretation of principles and facts upon which the management of the wildlife resources rests and the development of new improved methods, practices, techniques, and instruments necessary to perform such work.
As a Division of Forestry and Wildlife team member, you'll:
- Assist the Wildlife Manager in various game and non-game wildlife management projects on the island of Kauai.
- Work on projects involving seabirds, waterbirds, forest birds, game mammal and game birds under the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Program.
- Participate and assist the Forestry program, Native Ecosystems Protection & Management (NEPM) Program, Na Ala Hele (NAH) program, and wildland fire fighting duties if called upon.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsTo qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements: LEGAL AUTHORIZATION TO WORK: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Education Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, or in a related biological science, with a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester credit hours in the following areas:
- At least eighteen (18) semester credit hours of coursework applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, animal husbandry, zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology (animal), genetics, animal taxonomy, parasitology, entomology, herpetology, biometry; or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
- At least six (6) semester credit hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
Excess work experience as described under Experience Requirements below, or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience that provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.
The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systematically.
Specialized Experience Requirement: One (1) year for the III level, and for the IV level two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in wildlife conservation, development and management, and/or wildlife research.

Other Requirements:Firearms: This position requires the handling of firearms and ammunition when participating in predator control and eradication activities. FEDERAL FIREARM CONTROL ACT - LAUTENBERG AMENDMENTThis position requires incumbents to be qualified to use, carry, and have access to firearms at all times which includes being drug free.
Convictions of domestic violence preclude incumbents in these positions from carrying firearms and ammunition. An amendment to the Federal Firearm Gun Control Act (Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(9)) makes it illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence to carry and/or possess any firearm or ammunition.
