Job DescriptionJob Title: Regional Aquatics Biologist II Job DescriptionThe Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Northeastern Region office is seeking a Regional Aquatics Biologist. This position presents exciting opportunities to channel your love of the outdoors and improve fisheries resources. As a regional aquatic biologist, you will work with the Northeastern Region aquatics team to monitor, manage, and restore Colorado River Cutthroat Trout populations in streams and lakes in Northeastern Utah.
Northeastern Utah is one of the most geological diverse and unique environments in the United States. This Regional Aquatics Biologist works with a variety of coldwater fish species, in a range of landscapes (high mountain to desert), using various tools (monitoring, management, habitat). The position provides opportunities to learn and develop new skills, further education, gain supervisory experience and work with other partners. Responsibilities - Conduct biological surveys to monitor fish populations in reservoirs and streams in Northeastern Utah.
- Analyze biological data, interpret results, write reports summarizing findings, and develop management recommendations.
- Effectively communicate biological information with other biologists, management teams, and members of the public.
- Hire, train, and supervise seasonal technicians.
- Work cooperatively with biologists from other agencies and other organizations.
- Plan and implement stream habitat improvement projects and rotenone treatment projects.
Qualifications Requirements -
- Bachelor's degree in fisheries or related field, or directly related work experience equivalent
- Good writing skills
- Basic understanding of fisheries management techniques
- The ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team, and to supervise and mentor assistants.
- Ability to analyze and interpret freshwater fisheries data
- Driver's license
- Good communication skills and ability to articulate fisheries management concepts to the public.
Preference -
- Work experience with fish species found in Utah and standard monitoring practices
- Experience operating and maintaining boats and off-highway vehicles
- Experience with statistical programs like R or SAS
- Experience with horses (general care, riding, and packing into wilderness).
- Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a natural resources field. Additional preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in an aquatics-related natural resources field or other applicable field that is beneficial for the position.
- Preference for directly related work experience equivalent
Supplemental Information Working Conditions:Work may be performed in extreme and adverse weather conditions (heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.) Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy items (up to 75 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time. Must be able to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, OHVs, and operate motorboats.
Work Schedule: This is a full-time position 40 hours a week (Monday - Friday, 8; 00 am - 5:00 pm). Occasionally requires irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed during the field season, with occasional overtime. Overnight travel within Utah, and occasionally outside of the state, is required to attend meetings, conferences, wildlife management projects and activities, etc.
Requirements: - Valid driver's license.
- Certified non-commercial pesticide applicator license to be obtained upon employment.
- Must reside in or relocate to Uintah or Duchesne counties.
- A background check will be required to work with youth at fishing events.
- Adult OHV education certificate
