It shall be the mission of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to acquire, hold, and maintain lands within Kane County, which contribute to the conservation of natural or historic resources and habitats, flora or fauna; and to restore, restock, protect and preserve such lands for the environmental education, recreation, pleasure and well-being of all its citizens. Our goal is to Preserve and Restore the Nature of Kane County.
The Operations Department has a Horticulturist intern position available for the 2025 spring/summer season.
HOURLY RATE: $16.00
HOURS: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, MONDAY - FRIDAY
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Help devise and document proper and timely procedures and plans for maintaining the historical garden and other gardens in the District.
- Carry out the proper pruning and horticultural details of the existing plant materials in compliance with generally accepted plant maintenance for this region.
- Assist with the planting of new and annual plant materials.
- Assist with budgets for each upcoming season.
- Coordinate and regulate public use of assigned areas.
- Comprehend landscape plans and assist with installation.
- Maintain the grounds of the historical areas of Fabyan Forest Preserve and other areas as assigned.
- Learn and control weed species for our area.
- Other duties as assigned, in keeping with education, experience and training.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with assisting a Horticulturist or Landscape Designer or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
- Enthusiastic, courteous, positive attitude and team spirit.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Current and valid Illinois driver's license that is free from suspension or revocation during term of employment; must maintain insurability with the District's fleet carrier.
- Employment is subject to successful results of a criminal history background investigation and satisfactory completion of a physical and drug screen.
