Hired CA candidates must be able to pass a screening for drugs that are illegal in the state of California, including: amphetamine, cocaine metabolite, opiates, and PCP.The Opportunity...The Commercial and Residential Lead Installer is an intermediate- to expert-level solar installation position. Lead Installers bring valuable technical, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills to the construction department. They oversee the installation process and team for solar installations, with a focus on safety and quality of installation. They are an integral part of the construction leadership team, and help to carry out all of GRID missions, including a focus on equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Job Duties
- Conduct JHAs and pre-construction site safety assessments
- Serve as competent person for fall protection systems and electrical safety
- Train and mentor new on site staff on safety and technical procedures
- Verify paperwork and construction materials for installation preparation
- File and report all safety incidents, accidents, near misses per OSHA and GRID Alternatives policy
- Ability to make material lists, including but not limited to AC/DC equipment, needed racking, BOS, and safety
- Responsible for performing and overseeing all on-site technical and safety aspects of PV and storage (battery) installations (residential, commercial, and multi-family) from handoff to final inspection while meeting scheduled deadlines allotted by management
- Attend mandatory training sessions on new products, methodology and safety
- Ability to read plan sets and single line diagrams and follow layout of solar modules given to you by management team
- Lead installations of solar electric systems with crews of volunteers and/or job trainees, including but not limited to: installing racking systems and PV modules, bending conduit, wiring electrical boxes, penetrating roofs, climbing up and down ladders, and working with electrical equipment. Bending, reaching, and kneeling is required for all jobs
- Working on commercial rooftops as well as solar carports and ground mounted systems
- Lead the installation of mechanical/structural mounting of racking, modules and electrical equipment
- Perform Interconnections and shutdowns/tie-ins
- Perform high-end technical electrical work on residential systems, including load relocation for battery systems (and possibly up to and including Main Service Panel Upgrades)
- Responsible to keep all parties updated on project status with verbal and written communication
- Proficient in the use of computer and software applications, including (but not limited to) MS Office (excel a plus), G suite, inverter specific applications (Enphase toolkit, SolarEdge Set App, Etc), and CRM databases (salesforce, etc)
- Ability to lift, push and pull up to 70 lbs. and familiarity with proper lifting procedures
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders to reach rooftops and install solar
- Requires work outdoors in inclement weather conditions: hot/cold, windy, low visibility, smoky (all within OSHA limits and with proper use of PPE, keeping health and safety in mind)
- Ability to work an 8 hour shift Monday - Friday (summer hours are 5:30am - 2:00pm; winter hours are 6:30am - 3:00pm); Occasionally available for overtime, as well as some weekends and rarely overnight travel throughout the target territory and beyond. GRID Alternatives provides travel reimbursement and per diem
- Valid drivers' license and clean driving record (Within the past three years: Zero serious moving violations; One or fewer other moving violations)
It would be great if you also had... - Current Electrical License or ability to acquire within 12 months
- 2+ years working with Commercial PV Systems in a leadership role, or 4+ years working in a commercial/residential hybrid role.
- Passion for sustainability, affordable housing, the environment, or environmental justice, or just generally grounded in making the world a better place
- Experience in training and/or working with volunteers from diverse backgrounds
- NABCEP PV Associate or PV Installation Professional Certification
- Experience in PV system design, sketch up, or Autocad
- Bilingual English / Spanish / Other
Where you will sit and the places you may go...This position may rarely require up to 25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects such as company-wide celebrations, team building exercises, etc. Availability to work nights and weekends may very rarely be required.
GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver's license and have a good driving record.
