OVERVIEWInternship DescriptionThe Kitsap County waste reduction and recycling team is seeking an outgoing and motivated intern who is passionate about learning new things and educating others! This internship will provide hands-on experience with organizing events, environmental education, community outreach, and marketing. A successful intern will have strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
The intern will assist the Kitsap County Solid Waste Division with planning, coordinating, marketing, and implementing waste reduction and recycling events, including but not limited to Fix-it Fair community repair events, the Earth Day recognition event, waste collection events, waste facility tours, and composting and recycling outreach events. Duties may include:
- Helping to schedule and coordinate volunteers for events.
- Participating in events, including set-up and break-down.
- Organizing and maintaining event supplies and materials.
- Conducting public outreach at community events.
- Creating printed, digital, and social media content to market and implement events.
- Gathering feedback from the public.
- Other program support.
- Term of internship: Approximately March 24, 2025 - July 25, 2025.
- This is a paid internship for a minimum of 20-30 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
- Some evening and weekend work will be required.

KITSAP COUNTY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Kitsap County supports internship programs that provide work experience for students in an accredited post-secondary institution that is related to their course of study. The internship program is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principals and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be able to show proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution at the time of internship.
- Must have reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge and interest in waste prevention, recycling, repair, or reuse
- Some experience in communications, marketing, outreach, social media, event organizing, or public engagement is helpful but not required.
Desired Majors and Class Level:- Environmental studies, environmental science, communications, marketing, or environmental related field

Driving Requirements- The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment. The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy. This position is categorized as:
- Category 2: Driver operates a personal vehicle as an essential function for official County business.
Prior to employment, the successful candidate must: - Submit official transcripts from an accredited college or university or business school, if education is being used to meet the minimum qualifications.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Under the guidance of and support from Waste Reduction and Recycling staff, the intern will assist with:
- Waste facility tour: Developing, marketing, and implementing at least one public behind-the-scenes tour of the Olympic View Transfer Station.
- Earth Day Award recognition event: Planning and implementing one reception to celebrate Earth Day Award winners.
- Waste collection events: Planning, marketing, and implementing the Styrofoam Collection Event and Scrap Metal/Electronics Collection Event.
- Fix-it Fairs: Planning, marketing, and implementing at least one Fix-it Fair repair event, including coordinating volunteers and communicating with the venue.
- Compost and recycling outreach: Assist staff with educating residents about composting and recycling programs at community events and waste facilities.
- Marketing and outreach: Developing marketing and outreach materials as needed, including social media, web content, newsletters, social media content, videos, and photos.
