The Opportunity:
The Recycling Department at Facilities is seeking a Recycling Specialist I to support daily waste collection, recycling efforts, and campus upkeep. This role involves operating various vehicles and equipment, ensuring proper disposal of materials, and maintaining refuse containers while adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities:- Material Collection & Transport: Operate recycling trucks, pick-up trucks, and hydraulic lifting devices to collect and transport refuse and recyclable materials on and off campus.
- Empty refuse receptacles, pick up litter, and assist with general landscape maintenance as directed.
- Wash and inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation, reporting any issues to the supervisor.
- Coordinate and perform special pickups of appliances, computers, furniture, and other materials, working directly with customers to assess disposal needs.
- Conduct minor repairs, painting, and upkeep of refuse containers, including lids and locks. Perform periodic inspections and inventory checks.
- Quality Control & Safety Compliance: Monitor collected materials for contamination or hazardous waste, reporting any issues immediately. Maintain accurate collection records, including daily route sheets and work orders.
- Supply Management: Retrieve small supplies (e.g., gloves, cleaners, tools) with supervisor approval to support daily operations.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (50+ lbs.) and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of 9th grade. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ years of experience in waste management, recycling, custodial services, or a related field.
- Experience operating trucks, hydraulic lifting devices, forklifts, or other heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of recycling and waste disposal regulations, including handling hazardous materials.
- Basic mechanical skills for minor equipment and container maintenance.
- Excellent customer service skills for coordinating special collections and interacting with campus staff.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and willingness to adhere to workplace health and safety regulations.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including outdoor conditions and within differing climates.
- Able to communicate in conversational English to work effectively with customers and team members, operate electronic equipment (iPad for Integrated Work Management Systems PM checkpoints), comprehend standard safety procedures, and utilize telecommunication devices.
Health Assessment Required: UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:Position requires a valid Class E driver's license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
