This
Biologist Supervisor works directly with the Coastwide Programs Manager and Fisheries Management Section Chief to ensure all goals and objectives for the Protected Resources Program are accomplished. This includes the State's Observer Program which collects at-sea data from fisheries with the current focus on Atlantic Sturgeon and sea turtle interactions in the estuarine gill-net fishery. The Biologist Supervisor ensures compliance with the State's Incidental Take Permit and that division activities are conducted in accordance with the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act. The Biologist Supervisor is responsible for the following essential duties: direct supervision of three biologists and indirect supervision of eight technicians; oversight of the Protected Resources Program, assist with management recommendations; draft proclamations for management; serve as contact and spokesperson for protected species issues, involving extensive contact with fishermen, dealers, stakeholders, and the public; and represent the division on inter-state and inter-agency workgroups.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain compliance with the State's Incidental Take Permit in accordance with the Endangered Species Act
- Oversee the operation of the State's Observer Program
- Administration of grants which includes writing proposals, analyzing data, preparing reports, and making presentations.
- Discuss protected species issues and the Observer Program with the other agencies, stakeholder groups, and the public.
The Division of Marine FisheriesThe North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state's marine and estuarine resources. The DMF's jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore.
