The Town of Brookline is seeking a dedicated and experienced
Sustainability Outreach and Program Manager to support the implementation, promotion, and communication of sustainability initiatives that engage and empower the community.
Position Overview: The Sustainability Outreach and Program Manager will play a key role in executing the Town's climate action programs, including outreach, education, and event coordination. You'll drive community participation in the Climate Action and Resiliency Plan and other sustainability projects, helping residents and stakeholders adopt climate-friendly practices. The role will involve collaboration with various community partners, Town departments, schools, and businesses to promote environmental sustainability and foster a culture of climate action.
What You'll Do: - Support the Deputy Director of Sustainability in implementing the Climate Action and Resiliency Plan and other sustainability-related programs.
- Develop educational materials and resources to engage the community in climate action, including newsletters, social media, and event content.
- Plan and execute outreach activities, such as workshops, webinars, and events, to promote sustainable living and climate resilience.
- Track and analyze sustainability metrics to assess the impact of programs and policies.
- Work closely with Town departments, schools, and external organizations to build partnerships and further sustainability initiatives.
- Manage and update the Town's sustainability webpages and other communication platforms to keep residents informed.
- Address questions and concerns from residents, businesses, and community groups, ensuring clear communication on sustainability initiatives.
- Oversee grant applications and funding opportunities for sustainability projects, ensuring effective tracking and reporting.
- Serve as project manager for sustainability initiatives, ensuring successful execution from inception to completion.
- Continuously identify opportunities to expand programs that foster inclusivity and equity across all neighborhoods.

What We're Looking For: - Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, or a related field, with at least 3 years of experience in sustainability program implementation, community outreach, and education.
- Skills: Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills. Experience in creating educational materials and using graphic design tools is a plus. Proficiency in managing web and social media platforms is highly desired.

Supports the implementation of climate action programs, policies, and initiatives and drives community participation and adoption of key climate action campaigns. All other related work as required.
Supervision:Supervision Scope: Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough working knowledge of departmental and municipal operations. Exercises judgment and initiative to carry out assignments independently, analyzes situations and conditions, and recommends appropriate course of action from among many alternatives.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Sustainability and Natural Resources and the broad direction of the Director of Sustainability and Natural Resources, following department policies and appropriate professional standards.
Supervision Given: May supervise or otherwise assist in direction of interns or fellows, volunteers, or other staff conducting discrete projects concerning sustainability or natural resources in other Divisions of the Department of Public Works, or other departments/offices as appropriate.
Essential Functions:(The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Supports the Deputy Director of Sustainability in the implementation and outreach regarding the Climate Action and Resiliency Plan and other sustainability - related programs in Town. Contributes to the development of programs, policies, and procedures with community groups, Town Departments, Brookline Public Schools, non-governmental agencies, universities, businesses, and others to support the implementation of the Plan and related departmental goals.
- Provides administrative and professional staff support to the Zero Emissions Advisory Board (ZEAB).
- Establishes and tracks sustainability metrics to demonstrate impact of sustainability projects, programs, and policies.
- Supports the planning and execution of various sustainability education and climate action events for the Town. Designs, develops, and disseminates outreach information and activities to promote, educate, and support residents through the process to eliminate reliance on fossil fuels and other climate action projects.
- Grow community knowledge of and engagement in Brookline climate actions by regularly updating Town webpages, social media, newsletters, presentations, etc.; and works with community partners and consultants to develop branded materials such as banners, yard signs and flyers.
- Tracks the implementation and impact of the Climate Action and Resiliency Plan; Partners with relevant departments and stakeholders to gather data, prepare progress reports and quantify key measurements of success.
- Researches best practices and provides resources for Town departments to help them reach their climate action goals. Serves as project manager for priority sustainability initiatives as assigned.
- Identifies new opportunities to support programs and community-led projects that are inclusive and equitable to all neighborhoods town-wide.
- Addresses complaints from residents, community groups, businesses and other stakeholders.
- Maintains spreadsheets, records, and data supporting in detail the duties performed.
- Researches, secures, prepares and administers grant proposals, grant reporting, and tracking.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
Job Environment:Work is usually performed under typical office conditions; the noise level is moderate. Makes site visits with possible exposure to the hazards associated with construction sites. Attends frequent evening meetings, and some weekend events, both virtually and in person. Operates an automobile, computer, printer, copier, calculator, telephone, and other standard office equipment. Makes frequent contacts with other Town and school departments, boards and committees, community groups, government agencies, and the general public. Contacts are in person, in writing, by telephone and remotely and require discussing complex administrative and technical matters with persuasiveness, resourcefulness and discretion to influence the behavior of others. Errors in judgment or omissions could result in loss of municipal funds, negative climate outcomes, as well as financial and/or legal repercussions.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:Education, Training and Experience:Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, Energy, Environmental Policy, or Public Policy, or a related field, as well as at least three years of experience in sustainability planning and program implementation, including community education and outreach. Prior experience in a public-facing role in municipal government strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:Knowledge: Thorough working knowledge of climate change science, energy management, and organizational change strategies. Basic understanding of behavioral change, community education frameworks and programs.
Ability: Ability to organize and administer programs to a diverse group of people facing multiple barriers and challenges. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a variety of individuals including those across various municipal departments, boards and commissions, contractors and members of the public. Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to efficiently balance priorities of a multi- faceted job. Ability to lead community meetings and public processes, as well as serve as a representative of DPW in public forums and events. Project management experience and the ability to lead colleagues and community members to successful completion of a project.
Skill: Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills including presentations and workshop facilitation. Skilled at preparing educational and informational materials, correspondence and other written materials; including competence with common graphic design software or online design tools strongly preferred. Experience managing municipal or non-profit social media and web platforms. Computer proficiency using Windows based software including Excel and PowerPoint.
