Aquatic System Manager:

The Aquatics Manager is a high-level division supervisory position that is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of two Indian River County Aquatic Centers – North County Aquatic Center and Gifford Aquatic Center. This position is responsible for all phases of operation, including staffing, scheduling, procurement of goods and services, project management, development of operating policies and procedures, facility management, customer relations, staff development, and administration of operational budgets.  


Essential Job Duties

  • Staff Management: Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise aquatic staff. 


  • Facility Operations: Oversee daily operations of aquatic facilities, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and functionality. Manage pool maintenance, including water quality, chemical balancing, and equipment upkeep.


  • Safety and Compliance: Enforce all safety standards and regulations, including health codes and facility guidelines. Develop and implement emergency action plans. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.


  • Program Development: Plan, coordinate, and manage aquatic programs, including swim lessons, water aerobics, competitive swim events, and other recreational activities. Ensure programs are accessible and cater to all ages and skill levels.


  • Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service, addressing patron inquiries, complaints, and concerns in a timely manner. Promote positive interactions between staff and guests.


  • Budget Inventory and Management: Manage the aquatic budget, track expenses, and approve purchases for equipment and supplies. Monitor inventory and ensure proper maintenance and storage 

of all equipment.


  • Event Coordination: Assist with planning and executing special events and activities at the aquatic facilities, such as swim meets, community events, and private rentals.


  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with the marketing team to promote aquatic programs and events through various channels, including social media, flyers, and newsletters.
  • Project Management: Effectively manage projects related to the two facilities, including the construction, renovation, or maintenance of the swimming pools and related aquatic structures, encompassing all aspects from initial design and budgeting to project completion, while adhering to safety regulations and environmental considerations. 

Typical Requirements

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, or closely related field, plus a minimum of (10) ten years of recreation experience, including aquatic facility management and project management.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Preferred: Certified Park and Recreation Professional or Executive, Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator; Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR Certification

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Considerable knowledge of aquatic and recreation philosophy, planning, and administration.    


Knowledge of effective recreation and aquatic programming, including instructional, competitive, and special events.  


Knowledge of revenue management and effective budgeting practices.  


Ability to develop and manage a facility budget, develop standard operating procedures, develop facility policies, and recruit, train, and hire staff.   


Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.  


Ability to communicate effectively, verbal and written. 


Ability to work weekends, holidays, and early morning hours as required.


Skills in handling disputes or complaints from patrons or staff, mediating conflicts, and finding mutually agreeable solutions.


Ability to recruit, train, and lead a team of lifeguards, instructors, and support staff, while fostering a positive and productive work environment.

This is a salaried position exempt from overtime pay.  Exempt employees are provided four administrative leave days per calendar year in addition to vacation leave, sick leave, 11 paid holidays, and a personal day.  Please review our benefits handbook at Indian River County Benefits
