Description The
City of Fort Dodge is seeking a skilled professional to oversee the care, maintenance, and enhancement of public spaces, parks maintenance, and urban forest. The chosen candidate will play a vital role in maintaining and improving the City's public spaces, ensuring they are safe, healthy, and inviting for residents and visitors. This candidate will work closely with other city departments and community organizations on public space improvement and beautification efforts. This position will be hired as either a
City Forester or
Public Areas Supervisor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
Regardless of the title, the individual in this role must meet the following requirements:
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with teams and the public.
- Valid State of Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain it within six months of hire/placement, including a DMV record that is deemed acceptable by the City.
- Must hold an Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Pesticide Applicator's Certificate or be able to obtain it within six months of hire/placement.
- Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) strongly preferred.
Examples of Duties City Forester Responsibilities:- Manage all aspects of urban forestry development and maintenance projects, including managing a team of forestry workers, ensuring the safety of both employees and the public, and implementing sustainable practices to enhance and preserve the urban tree canopy.
- Administer tree planting, maintenance, and removal programs.
- Monitor tree health and address pest/disease issues.
Public Areas Supervisor Responsibilities:- Oversee departmental maintenance projects for parks, forestry, grounds, and facilities, leading and managing staff assignments and ensuring employee and public safety.
- Supervise the maintenance, operations and care of City-owned properties, including parks, forestry, grounds, public spaces and assigned facilities.
- Plan and oversee landscaping, mowing, and beautification efforts.
- Ensure proper upkeep of public grounds, including playgrounds and recreational spaces.
- Coordinate with other departments on public area improvements and events.
Typical Qualifications For City Forester:- Minimum of 5 years of experience in urban forestry management, with demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
- A Bachelor's degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field is preferred.
For Public Areas Supervisor:- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, including project management in the areas of urban forestry, park maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, and facility maintenance.
- A Bachelor's degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, conservation, park management, or a related field is preferred.
