Summary. We are seeking Foresters for a two-week project supporting two forestry initiatives in New Mexico. The Foresters will play a critical role in conducting stand-level data collection, validating GIS data, and assisting in the development of silvicultural prescriptions for forest management. This position involves working in remote, rugged terrain to collect field measurements that will guide wildfire mitigation, habitat restoration, and timber management strategies.
Foresters will be responsible for ground truthing GIS data, assessing forest conditions, and performing detailed stand exam inventories using ESRI Field Maps. This work supports projects in hazardous fuel reduction and forest stand diversity enhancement, contributing to sustainable forest management efforts.
Responsibilities.
• Conduct field data collection using ESRI Field Maps and standardized stand exam protocols.
• Perform ground truthing of GIS data provided by the BIA, validating stand classifications, topography, hydrology, soils, and vegetation.
• Measure forest inventory plots, including:
o Trees = 4.0" DBH on a 1/20th-acre fixed plot
o Trees 1.0" - 3.9" DBH on a 1/250th-acre fixed plot
o Down woody material = 1.0' in diameter and = 1.0' in length along a 25-50 foot transect
• Collect site-level plot level data including location information and primary fire carrier (vegetation typ)
• Collect data surface fuels data using a Modified Browns Transect
• Collect Tree level data including height, diameter and defect characteristics
• Collaborate with forestry specialists and GIS analysts to refine treatment recommendations and validate office-based data.
• Support the development of silvicultural prescriptions by contributing field data collection for forest growth projections, treatment planning, and modeling.
• Ensure accuracy and consistency in all collected data, following federal and project-specific methodologies.
Requirements
Qualifications.
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience with forest inventory, stand exams, or silvicultural assessments.
• Fluency with ESRI Field Maps or other GIS-based data collection applications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Understanding of silvicultural prescriptions and forest treatment planning.
• Knowledge of BIA forestry policies and federal forest management practices.
• Strong field navigation skills using GPS and GIS-based applications.
• Ability to identify tree species, vegetation types, and stand characteristics.
• Familiarity with forest health indicators, including insect damage, disease, and fuel loading.
• Detail-oriented with strong data recording and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a field team.
Work Environment and Physical Abilities:
• Remote forested areas in the Chuska Mountains and Dezza Bluff, NM.
• Ability to hike long distances (several miles) in uneven, steep, and rugged terrain.
• Exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, and possibly precipitation.
• Ability to carry equipment (up to 40 lbs) while hiking through field.
• 10-12 hour days.
Compensation. The mid range for this position is between $35-45/hour. The actual hourly rate offered depends on factors, including but not limited to, qualifications, years of relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, business need, and market demand.
