Primary Purpose of Position:The Gardener at Tryon Palace will perform all levels of garden and grounds maintenance required to maintain the highest aesthetic standards throughout the property.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Responsible for general daily care of landscape including trees, shrubs, annual and perennial beds, which include detailed weeding, fertilizing, mowing, pruning, shearing, hedges, and applying pesticides.
- Prepare seasonal high-quality horticultural displays in assigned garden areas for public view.
- Maintain lawns, marl paths, sidewalks, and mulched beds.
- Propose planting plans and select culturally adapted and historical plantings to improve appearance of the gardens.
- Contribute to educational quality of horticultural exhibits through research.
- Support special events by preparing gardens and grounds for interpretive/educational events and third-party events.
- Provide customer service at bi-annual heritage plant sale and holiday Candlelight event.
Position/Physical Requirements:- Must have a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to work 7:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday, with weekend work on a regular rotation and as needed for special events.
- Requires lifting some heavy materials (50 - 100 lbs.) with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to perform repetitive manual tasks.
- Must be able to operate power equipment.
- Must be able to obtain NC Pesticide License within 9 months of employment.
