We are seeking a part-time Gardener to assist the horticulture team in Parks Maintenance District 5, Central Business District. The ideal candidate has a passion for horticulture and how public parks contribute exceptional experiences to the lives of the people of Raleigh.
Work Hours:
This role is a permanent part-time position scheduled to work 25 hours per week between the workdays and hours of Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
- Understands and implements good horticultural practices including, weeding, watering, proper pruning, soil preparation, planting, invasive plant removal, soil testing, and fertilization
- Receives training on how to safely operate small equipment and required to use equipment such as, string trimmers, blowers, edgers, and operate commercial vehicles and trailers under 26,000 pounds (non-CDL)
- Assists the City with cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations
Education and Experience:
High School Education or GED equivalent and less than 1 year of horticultural gardening experience required
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Great customer service skills to advise garden clubs, civic groups, and individual citizens on gardening subjects and regularly work with volunteers to accomplish large projects
- Working independently with little supervision as well as a part of a team
- Self-motivated, and detail oriented
ADA and Other Requirements:
The employee is required to use repetitive hand motion, count, stand, walk, lift, kneel, stoop, crouch, bend, and lift.
Heavy Work:
This position is required to perform heavy work, which includes exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
The candidate must have the ability to work outside and in all weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold, and rain and snow.
