Job DescriptionThis position is open to Department Employees only.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Habitat is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 3 (Region 3 Habitat Biologist 3) located in Fairbanks!What you will be doing:The Department of Fish and Game, Habitat Section is currently recruiting for a permanent, full time Habitat Biologist 3. Under general supervision, this dynamic position is crucial to fulfilling the Habitat Section's mission to protect Alaska's fish, wildlife, and their habitats during the development and operation of diverse resource extraction activities throughout Interior and Northern Alaska. Specific duties include evaluating and issuing proper authorizations for a wide variety of large projects such as: oil and gas exploration and development, hard rock and placer mining activities, highway construction projects, etc. The successful applicant will be responsible for leading aquatic resource sampling at exploratory and/or operating mines; performing data analysis and management; writing technical reports; and leading the laboratory preparation and/or analysis of fish tissues, otoliths, chlorophyll spectrophotometry, benthic macro invertebrates, etc.
Our organization, mission, and culture: The Habitat Section is entrusted with protecting the Alaska's valuable fish and wildlife resources and their habitats as the population and economy continue to expand. Accordingly, the incumbent will document and evaluate both predevelopment and ongoing biological conditions at various sites throughout Interior and Northern Alaska. The incumbent will conduct applied research to identify ways to minimize impacts of development projects on fish and wildlife and pursue opportunities to enhance and protect habitat in cooperation with other agencies and organizations. The incumbent will also review applications and issue authorizations (permits) for activities in fish-bearing waters and legislatively designated special areas.

The working conditions you can expect:The ADF&G office in Fairbanks is located immediately adjacent to Creamers Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge where you can quickly access trails for hiking, running, fat biking and Nordic skiing/ skijoring. Fairbanks offers access to abundant wilderness adventures, and remote hunting and fishing opportunities. Field work involves travel across Interior Alaska and north of the Arctic Circle.
- During the open water season. approximately 30% of the position's responsibilities may be composed of field work including hiking and bushwhacking through difficult terrain in all weather conditions while carrying heavy and bulky sampling equipment and a firearm for protection; and traveling in small aircraft, helicopter, open skiff, inflatable raft, and/or all-terrain vehicle.
Who we are looking for:We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Experience conducting diverse project reviews and environmental permitting pursuant to AS Title 16 (Fish Habitat Permits) and 5 AAC 95 (Special Area Permits), and demonstrated ability to make reasonable and practicable decisions relative to resource development projects.
- Experience working simultaneously on the evaluation of multiple diverse resource development projects; while providing quality products, meeting deadlines, and managing time efficiently.
- Experience developing and providing constructive comments on authorizations and environmental issues under the authority of other natural resource management agencies.
- Experience developing and implementing new aquatic sampling programs to evaluate potential impacts to fish and wildlife resources from development projects.
- Experience coordinating project reviews, monitoring projects for compliance with approved plans and permit conditions and conducting enforcement actions when necessary.
- Proven experience successfully working both independently and cooperatively in a small team environment.

- This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
- MSHA new miner training or annual refresher
- Required training, which may be completed on the job, includes: peace officer of the state deputization; firearms and wildlife safety; wilderness first aid, CPR, and AED; Mine Safety and Health Administration surface miner and site specific; and laboratory safety. Additional training opportunities may include: introduction to ArcPro; remote worker swiftwater safety; water ditching and survival; and electrofishing techniques.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
