To learn more about The City of Fort Collins and Our Community, please read Our Community and Our Organization BrochureJob SummaryThe Environmental Sustainability Specialist position will serve a crucial role in the Environmental Services Department, supporting the community's triple bottom line values and adopted Zero Waste goals. The majority of this position will support the City's single-hauler residential trash and recycling collection program and involves a combination of administrative support, customer service, monitoring compliance, and public outreach. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn new processes and approach work with a commitment to equity, both in process and outcomes to ensure that the program best meets community needs.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Administration
- Prepare reports and maintains records related to the program including tracking community interactions and compliance activities
- May assist with tracking and administering grants
- Customer Service
- Respond to inquiries, complaints, and service requests from community members, employees, and City Council, ensuring an empathetic approach to all customers
- Offer assistance in a way that addresses barriers to access such as providing in-person support or using translation services when needed
- Follow up to resolve issues and escalate as needed, documenting customer interactions
- Compliance
- May assist with monitoring and enforcing compliance with municipal code, including data entry, tracking deadlines, and coordinating compliance activities (e.g. mailings, application review, scheduling appointments)
- May work with external groups such as HOAs, contractors, and residents to ensure adherence to program guidelines
- Outreach and Engagement
- Represent program at community events, with an emphasis on ensuring equitable program access
- May assist with preparing and presenting educational material on the program or waste reduction and recycling practices
- Update program website as directed

- Demonstrated ability to develop graphics, tables, and other visual materials in support of management needs.
- Knowledge of practices and principles of project management.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in a variety of styles and formats.
- Ability to deliver effective presentations to groups of varying size and interests.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective highly professional relationships with users, customers and other City employees.
Required QualificationsMinimumPreferredCollege degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Planning, Natural Resources Management, Engineering, Ecology, Sustainability, Environmental or Atmospheric Science; or related field plus a minimum of three years related experience.
Experience Requirements- One (1) years related experience or a combination of education and experience.
