Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer (Remote, 12-Month Contract)
**Commercial Nuclear Experience Required**System One is seeking a
highly skilled and motivated Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to contribute to
cutting-edge advanced nuclear reactor projects. This
remote role offers the opportunity to lead
innovative instrument and control system designs, prototype development and testing, and plant-level system integration and commissioning.
The ideal candidate will bring
deep expertise in system design and commercial nuclear applications, collaborating with internal and external teams to develop
state-of-the-art control systems for next-generation reactors.
Key Responsibilities - Lead end-to-end design of I&C and supporting electrical systems, from requirements development through final design.
- Collaborate with diverse, geographically distributed teams, including company engineers, subcontractors, partners, and customers, to develop supporting design documentation.
- Perform high-level engineering and design evaluations, applying nuclear codes, standards, NRC regulations, and licensing requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship, ensuring adherence to nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
- Identify, specify, and integrate custom instrumentation with advanced control systems, optimizing measurement techniques for sodium fast reactor and integrated energy storage applications.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards such as IEEE 379, IEEE 603, IEEE 7-4.3.2, IEEE 497, and applicable nuclear quality assurance requirements (e.g., 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).
- Develop and manage detailed system and sub-system design packages, including control system architecture, control logic and loop diagrams, and instrument installation drawings.
- Interface with suppliers to ensure technical requirements are met, reviewing vendor deliverables for accuracy and compliance.
- Support licensing and regulatory activities, including development of Safety Analysis Reports.
- Drive continuous improvement, applying nuclear industry best practices to enhance engineering processes and deliverables.
Key Qualifications & Skills - B.S. or higher in Controls, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of direct experience in instrumentation and controls systems design, development, and implementation.
- Extensive experience in nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation design.
- Proven expertise in developing industrial I&C platforms and integrating them with complex systems.
- Experience designing and operating high-temperature processes (400°C and higher) is a plus.
- Familiarity with process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) is preferred.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Standard, AutoCAD Electrical, or SolidWorks).
- Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to lead projects with multiple competing objectives and constraints, resolving conflicts efficiently.
- Self-starter with the ability to coordinate and lead a multidisciplinary design team.
