Job Opening:
The Department of Conservation and Recreation is seeking candidates for the position of Forester II, Forest Health Forestry Supervisor.
In addition, DCR has conservation programs that enhance and protect natural resources throughout the Commonwealth. The Forest Health Program is a critical first line of defense for monitoring forest health issues across the state. Responsible for planning and implement ation of Forest Health insect and disease survey s and treatment program s , particularly providing expertise on forest pathology and supporting the Asian longhorned Beetle Eradication Program . Supervis e team of fulltime and seasonal staff.
DUTIES:
-Oversee and manage federal grants related to forests health disease and insect monitoring , including ALB Cooperative Agreement .
-Supervise full time and LTS DCR staff.
-Work with City and Federal officials in negotiating and creating regulatory and survey protocols in a quarantine.
-Identify Asian Longhorned Beetle damage on the 12 different host genera of trees.
-Utilize knowledge and extensive experience in Northeastern Forest Ecology, including virology, bacteriology, mycology, entomology, biology, ecology and plant pathology aspects as they pertain to forest health .
-Utilize knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in connection with pathology and the invasive disease of the Northeast.
-Utilize digital data collection methods and GIS tools for insect and disease surveys .
-Oversee procurement process for DCR/state procurement obligations related to the Forest Health program . Ensure all laws, rules and best practices relative to procurement and financing are followed .
-Provide technical assistance and related information regarding forest health threats to municipal officials, property owners and the general public .
-Provide oversight and assistance to USDA and DCR compliance officers with regulatory issues in accordance to MGL Ch. 132 and Ch. 266.
-Compile information for the purpose of presenting workshops and technical training on forest health issues .
-Represent MA DCR Forest Health Program at interagency meetings, as assigned.
-Present Forest Health Updates for the state of Massachusetts at interagency meetings and appropriate trainings , as assigned .
-Prepare reports for and attend assigned meetings and conference calls.
-Provide oversite for the development and implementation of forest pathogen early detection and disease spread protocols.
-Collect samples and provide identification of forest pathogens.
-Represent the state's interests on all matter s related to the Mass . Asian Longhorned Beetle i nfestation.
-Remain current on the invasive and pest insect, pathogen, and pest problems of the Northeast and Massachusetts.
-Provide assistance , as assigned, to the Forest Health Program with pathogen and insect monitoring, trapping, biosurveillance , and control.
Qualifications:First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of forest resource management, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in forest resource management may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in forest resource management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
III. A Graduate degree with a major in forest resource management may be substituted for the required experience *
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
