About the Position: Seattle Parks and Recreation is looking to fill Gardener positions on multiple teams: Grounds-District Unit, the Landscape Crew, the Natural Area Crew, and the Arboretum Program.
This position is an integral part of the Parks and Environment Division which has a $70 million plus budget and is responsible for the maintenance and management of over 500 parks, greenways, specialty gardens, trails system, tree canopy, natural areas, park comfort stations, athletic fields/turfs, and environmental areas. The division also provides the ongoing technical and customer service support needed to facilitate day-to-day operations and maintenance activities for the city's parks.
Job Responsibilities Work requires knowledge of standard methods, materials, procedures, tools, and equipment associated with landscaping and gardening. Use judgment in interpreting various conditions, applying guidelines, and choosing the proper method to complete the work. Occasional contacts with the public are to provide information and are incidental to the performance of the work.
Examples of Duties:- Transplant and prune trees and shrubs.
- Lead small groups of assistant gardeners, laborers, and volunteers.
- Understand and apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Operate pesticide spray equipment and maintain records of pesticide application.
- Repair and maintain irrigation systems.
- General maintenance of lawn areas includes seeding, fertilizing, mowing, aerating, and sod installation.
- Operate motor vehicles to and from work locations.
- Prepare, plant, and maintain planting beds.
- Work on landscape construction and landscape maintenance projects.
- Aid in the annual native plant delivery and ordering for the Green Seattle Partnership.
- Cistern irrigation installations and maintenance.
- Order materials, schedule creation, and maintain pesticide work schedules.
- Maintain and prepare a variety of records.
- Plant native plants at forest sites.
- Winter storm response - supporting natural resources unit as needed.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:- Minimum of two years' work experience in landscape construction/maintenance, or in the propagation and maintenance of flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees at a conservatory, greenhouse, or nursery. (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).
You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities: - 2-3 years of landscape or greenhouse work experience
- The ability to operate a range of landscape equipment (ex. Chainsaw, lawnmower, leaf blower and rototiller)
- Be able to work in a wide range of weather conditions outdoor, or high humidity and temperature environment under glass.
- Be able to climb landscape ladder up to 6 ft.
Additional Information - Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- Required to lift objects that weigh 50 pounds or less.
- Handles or works with toxic/hazardous substances.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Required to work in areas of high vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
