DescriptionThe Mosquito Control Biologist I oversees and manages mosquito larviciding activities in assigned geographical area and provides support to other areas of mosquito control operations. Learns to perform a variety of activities to support all aspects of mosquito control operations and conduct aerial inspections and aerial spray missions in assigned areas.
Essential FunctionsInspection/Treatment:- Perform and/or assist with conducting larviciding spray missions in assigned areas
- Inspect and/or assist with inspections of assigned geographical areas for the presence of larvae, pupae and adult mosquitoes and record findings
- Conduct daily counts of mosquito larva and calculate spray area
- Conduct aerial inspections of assigned geographical area, determine which areas need to be treated and which chemical would be most appropriate
- Work closely with Pilots to execute and conduct spray missions
- Manage the overall inspection and treatment needs of assigned geographical areas including determining daily staff assignments and making adjustments to treatment and inspection plans
- Respond to larviciding/adulticiding service requests as needed
- Distributes mosquito fish around the county to control mosquito larvae
- Conduct back checks on areas treated, evaluate the efficacy of control practices imposed and determine next course of action to correct any deficiency
- Survey for any unexpected environmental response to control practices and follow appropriate notification and documentation protocol
- Ensure Field Inspector(s) and/or Marine inspector(s) are following all protocol, procedures and applicable record keeping practices for all aspects of mosquito control operations in assigned geographical area
- Work closely with the Mosquito Control Biologist III to coordinate mosquito control operational requirements including scheduling aircraft, heliport maintenance, fuel deliveries, and coordinating staff/equipment
- Work closely with Field Inspector(s) and/or Marine Inspector(s) to perform all aspects of each position assigned in each geographical area
- Assist adulticiding team by conducting adult surveillance and/or ground adulticiding in assigned areas as needed
- Work closely with Mosquito Control Biologists I and II in other geographical areas to become familiar with the unique aspects of each area including rainfall and tidal affects, storm drains and different treatment procedures that apply to each geographical area
- Be familiar with FWC/DEP/Federal lands and who to notify before treating and which chemicals are permitted
- Enter inspection/spray/back check data into database
Chemical Usage/Calibration:- Assist with conducting droplet measurements on aircraft and ULV trucks
- Assist with calibration and the preparation of spray equipment for both ground and aerial equipment for the season
- Work closely with the Mosquito Control Biologist III and/or FVAL to determine the appropriate chemicals/biological control for different environmental situations
- Mix chemicals, load chemicals into helicopter, fuel helicopters, and be responsible for mixing chemicals correctly
- Ensure the Larvicide Mix Sheet is completed when a larvicide is mixed or loaded
- Conduct inspections of aircraft fuel integrity by performing proper testing techniques and recording all results on log sheets
- Conduct inspections to heliport fuel tanks, once a month, and record findings
- Conduct the monthly chemical inventory of heliports and assigned vehicle(s), including tanker truck and ground larviciding trucks the first of each month
- Become proficient at data entry of monthly inventory data into MapVision
Mapping: - Create and modify larviciding treatment plans for assigned geographical area in MapVision
- Cross train on how to create larviciding post mission maps
- Analyze post mission maps to assess effectiveness of application and make necessary adjustments
Identification/Insectary/Laboratory:- Identify mosquito species found in Lee County in adult and larval stages
- Understand and become familiar with the day-to-day operation of the insectary
- Assist with larvae collection and assist with susceptibility bioassays in the laboratory as needed
- Become familiar with how to set mosquito traps and be able to fill in should it become necessary
- Understand and become familiar with the scope of the Truck Trapping operations and how it affects the day-to-day work of mosquito control operations
- Understand and become familiar with the scope of the disease surveillance operations and how it affects the day-to-day work of mosquito control operations
- Understand and become familiar with the sentinel chicken flocks and how it affects the day-to-day work of mosquito control operations
- Assist as needed in the identification of specimens collected in traps
General: - Assist the Public Educators with educational activities in the Lee County Public School Districts and in the community
- Work closely with Mosquito Control Biologist III in assisting with the response to public, media and governmental agency inquiries as needed
- Perform a variety of maintenance duties including mowing and trimming, surveillance trails, landing zones and heliports, and performing construction/deconstruction to the District's properties
- Refuel and wash vehicle as needed
- Responsible for completing his/her time card on a daily basis
- Approve all payroll time cards and Time-Off requests for all employees in line of supervision
- Responsible for submitting all Time-Off Request as soon as he/she knows they will be absent, late or leaving early
- Responsible for ensuring time card is correct and approved by 8:00 a.m. on payroll Mondays
- Responsible for wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Communicate with the public in a professional and courteous manner and refer all inquiries outside area of expertise back to the appropriate person at the District
- Follow all Districts Safety policies and procedures and comply with all local, state and federal regulations at all times
- Attend state and federal meetings on mosquito issues as needed
- Responsible for ensuring all equipment assigned to the team is maintained and repaired as needed
- Responsible for reporting damage to vehicle/ equipment in a timely manner
- Must have regular and predictable attendance
- Other duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications:- Bachelors' degree in Natural Sciences, Entomology or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred. An equivalent combination of training and/or experience that includes in-depth knowledge of mosquito control practices may be substituted for a degree
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and have the ability to learn and operate internal/web based programs including GIS systems and databases
- Must be able to work a varied schedule including weekends and nights
- Ability to fly in helicopters
- Must be able to read, communicate and understand technical instructions in English
- Must have a valid Class E drivers license and a clean driving record
- Ability to operate a variety of small equipment, as well as towing/operating a trailer
- Must hold a current Public Health License or obtain one within six (6) months of employment and maintain certification by earning appropriate CEUs (continuing education units)
- May be required to obtain Part 107 Certification
- May be required to obtain a CDL
- Must be able to read and understand chemical labels in English

Physical Requirements: Heavy physical activity is required on a regular basis including lifting, reaching for, pulling and carrying up to fifty pounds, reaching and pulling with arms, stooping and bending frequently, walking for long distances, sitting, standing, climbing over and around natural obstacles and climbing in and out of various vehicles and equipment. Using hands and fingers to type, grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment is required on a regular basis. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is frequently required.
Work Environment: The work environment varies but normally is outdoors, in a helicopter, vehicle or office but may include warehouses, boats, heliports, mangroves, fields, islands, woods/swamps and open water. Regular exposure to all types of weather is required as the position is required to work outside, exposed to high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind. Frequent local travel, often in a helicopter, is required. Exposure to loud and moderate noise levels will occur on a regular basis when around aircraft, helicopters, tanker trucks and a variety of other equipment, motors and engines. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required frequently. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes, insects, and wildlife is required.
