Dr. George W. Benz was the first Chief Research Scientist of the Tennessee Aquarium and founder of the research institute that became the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute. In a career that spanned both coasts, George's research interests were as large as his personality: from parasitology and evolutionary relationships of copepods to fisheries biology and southeastern freshwater conservation. One of his longest-lasting contributions to the field, however, was his devotion to teaching and mentoring. He was known for finding and encouraging future biologists, with a deep belief in the importance of field work in shaping their research endeavors.
