The Fisheries Management Division is organized into a Hatchery Section and a Research and Management Section. This position exists within the Research and Management Section's Native Fish Program. The Native Fish Program is charged with managing New Mexico's native fisheries and aquatic invertebrates including state and federally listed threatened and endangered species.

Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to lead conservation activities for native fishes in the Rio Grande, Pecos River, and Canadian basins. This position will also be responsible for enhancement of the conservation status for numerous fish species through various projects; such as restoration, habitat improvement, captive propagation, health testing, and population monitoring across much of the state. This position also participates in numerous inter-agency and interstate committees and working groups. This position requires a high degree of technical expertise, field and office capabilities, quantitative skills, and independent judgment to solve complex problems. The incumbent must also collaborate with a diverse group of colleagues and maintain a positive attitude while working in challenging physical and environmental conditions. The position will report to and work closely with the Rio Grande Basin Native Fish Supervisor to execute projects.
How does it get done?
Major job tasks will include:
- Develop and implement conservation and management actions to benefit all native fishes except Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout in the Rio Grande, Pecos River, and Canadian River basins.
- Conduct life history, population, and ecological studies of non-salmonid native fishes
- Develop and administer grants and contracts that support management, research, and conservation of non-salmonid native fishes
- Restore native fish populations and their habitats
- Summarize and analyze biological data and prepare technical reports and presentations based on findings of survey and research efforts
- Work with interagency conservation groups to achieve conservation goals for native fishes

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate:
- Possess a degree in wildlife, fisheries, ecology or a related subject and experience working in a fisheries or a closely related field.
- Has experience working independently in remote settings.
- Has participated in inter-agency conservation activities that include diverse public and private stakeholders.
- Has at least two years experience working with threatened, endangered, or imperiled aquatic species.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology, or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years directly related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License as statewide travel may be required. Pre-employment criminal background check is required and conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work will occur in approximately equal proportions in both office and field settings. Field work and meeting attendance will require travel throughout the state and region. The position will require the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, hike long distances, camp in remote locations, and ride horseback. Use of fish sampling equipment (electrofishers, nets, seines, traps, etc.), rafts, motor boats, OHVs, and other equipment will be required. The position will require significant walking, lifting, and bending, as well as working in and around water.
