POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is under the general supervision of the Senior Wildlife Biologist and Department Director. In coordination with the Senior Wildlife Biologist, employee will be responsible for oversight and management of the field component of condor reintroduction, including coordinating lead field staff, condor health monitoring and tracking; biological sample collection; data collection management, oversight, and analysis; support for grant writing; support for grant and permit management and reporting; coordinating and contributing to Wildlife Department education and outreach objectives; and supporting coordination between the Tribe and other relevant entities and organizations. Incumbent will provide technical support and assistance to other professional wildlife biology personnel engaged in scientific and technical work in the wildlife biology field. Biologist's duties will include fieldwork as well as office work.
Examples of Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as primary California condor field crew coordinator, including training, coordination, and supervision of field crews, volunteers, and contractors in the correct use of field vehicles and equipment; safety protocols for crew and birds; condor management and monitoring; and safe handling of birds in the field and in trapping situations as appropriate.
2. Coordinates condor trapping for health and equipment checks, research projects, and other wildlife related field activities.
3. Engages with external partners and landowners for outreach purposes and to facilitate condor management on federal, state, tribal, private, and other properties.
4. Coordinates and oversees data collection and management. Compiles and analyzes collected field data and creates written data summaries and reports.
5. Conducts geospatial analyses using various applications, including ESRI and Google Earth tools.
6. Coordinates with geospatial experts and statisticians regarding additional research and analysis.
7. Contributes significantly to identifying and developing proposals for funding opportunities to continue condor management into the next fiscal year.
8. Advertises for and engages with outside entities regarding hiring of condor monitoring crew and bringing on of volunteers.
9. Engages with the community in educational outreach events, especially regarding potentially sensitive or controversial topics.
10. Oversees social media presence of the condor program and tracks donations and donors through online interface.
11. Operates computers and standard software to create necessary reports, analyses, correspondence, and database management as needed.
12. Operates and maintains boats, small, motorized equipment, traps, and other wildlife equipment, as well as passenger vehicles and light trucks.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
1. Grade 9: bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife biology, or natural resource management, or
related field with emphasis in wildlife and three (3) years' job specified experience.
2. Grade 10: bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife biology, or natural resource management, or
related field with emphasis in wildlife and five (5) years' job specified experience or 2 years of
progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's equivalent
graduate degree and two years' experience as a Wildlife Biologist II.
3. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be
considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Some knowledge of life history, biology, and habitat of historical restoration activities
related to the California Condor.
2. Knowledge of and experience in conducting basic wildlife surveys, including habitat mapping,
transect surveys, wildlife live-trapping, use of YAGI antennas, radio telemetry, directional radar
surveys, and direct observation surveys.
3. Experience in and ability to supervise field crews in an organized, productive manner and
provide data quality control while maintaining a positive and safe work environment.
4. Experience in effectively managing multiple projects with varying timelines and objectives.
5. Practical knowledge of record keeping, data storage and accumulation, data recall,
organization, and presentation.
6. An understanding of and significant experience utilizing advanced statistical analyses.
7. Skill in presenting data and its analysis, discussions and recommendations in a form
requiring a minimum of review and editing.
8. Ability to organize and implement sound plans, procedures, and schedules.
9. Skill in writing and oral expression.
10. Strong computer skills, including prior experience using word processing, database,
presentation, and spreadsheet programs.
11. Experienced and skilled with GIS and statistical software.
12. Ability to operate hand and power tools, chainsaws, ATVs, and use trailers.
13. Ability to demonstrate originality and good judgment in adapting accepted practices and
procedures required to accomplish specific tasks under changing or unexpected circumstances.
14. Experience in communicating regarding sensitive or controversial conservation topics.
15. Willing to commit to extended fieldwork weeks and travel to remote sampling locations
(potential for negotiated exceptions).
16. Able to pass a firearm and ammunition background check.
17. Able to pass a background check for working with children.
18. Must be able and willing to work cooperatively and productively with other tribal and
non-tribal natural and cultural resource groups.
19. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok
history,
culture and values.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Previous experience working in condor related conservation action.
2. Ability to swim.
3. Extensive radio telemetry experience.
4. Basic understanding of disease biology and ecology.
5. Chainsaw or chainsaw instructor certification.
6. ATV or ATV instructor certification.
7. Knowledge of life history, biology, and habitat requirements of threatened species in the Klamath Basin region (American marten, fisher, spotted owl, marbled murrelet, snowy plover), species of specific interest to the Tribe (elk, black-tailed deer, black bear, pileated woodpecker, etc.), some knowledge of herpetological species of concern (foothill yellow-legged frog and western pond turtle).
