Jackson County Forestry and Parks Department is now accepting applications for a Limited Term Employee (LTE) Forester Technician. The LTE Forester Technician duties include, but are not limited to treating invasive species, forest reconnaissance, regeneration surveys. At times, technician may work with foresters in marking trees for timber sales, scaling cut timber, delineating timber types and developing management prescriptions for timber stands. 

Typical work week is Monday through Thursday 6am to 4pm. Roughly 40 hours per week and lasting approximately four (4) months; starting by the end of May.

This is a non benefited position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Performs forest reconnaissance and regeneration surveys using GPS units and electronic data recorders.  Stand examination information obtained would consist of forest cover type, tree species, tree diameters, tree heights, stand age, basal area, soil type, timber volumes, habitat type, site index, invasive species identification, insect and disease damage
  • Other forestry related duties may include timber sale establishment and timber stand improvement

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEREQUIREMENTS

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited school with course work towards Forestry or related Natural Resources field of study;  Associate’s Degree in Forestry or related Natural field of study preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver’s license

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB

  • Ability to conduct forest measurements which include the use of compass and pace, clinometer, increment borer, diameter tape and basal area prism
  • Knowledge of Dendrology, Silviculture, plant identification, habitat typing, aerial photograph interpretation and land navigation reading maps
  • Ability to work in varied terrain and adverse weather conditions 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, and laws in the English language
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communications
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Inductive and deductive reasoning – ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense
