Job Overview This Scientist opportunity is for a flexible and self-motivated individual that is willing to learn and grow as part of a team while providing ecological expertise to projects within the Sediment and Risk Assessment (SRA) and Remediation (REM) service lines at EHS Support. As a Scientist, you will be joining a high-performance team of risk assessors, toxicologists, ecologists, scientists, and engineers that is focused on providing high-quality technical and strategic solutions to a variety of clients. Your primary responsibilities in the Scientist position will include assisting with development of ecological assessments, supporting and implementing field-based environmental investigations, analyzing environmental data in support of investigation objectives, engaging in technical writing to report findings for routine and complex scenarios under federal, state and international programs.
Essential Responsibilities - Support development of ecological risk assessments under federal, state, and international regulatory programs (including CERCLA and RCRA programs)
- Develop site-specific conceptual exposure models to characterize constituent fate and transport dynamics and identify ecological receptors and complete exposure pathways.
- Obtaining, organizing, reviewing, and synthesizing environmental data in an organized and concise manner.
- Analyzing environmental data in support of investigation objectives and defined data quality objectives (DQOs) using Microsoft Excel, geographic information systems (GIS), or other programmatic software (e.g., R, Python).
- Engaging in technical writing to report findings and interpretations of data analysis to support investigation objectives.
- Communicating (both written and verbal) the findings of data analyses and interpretation to both lay and technical audiences.
- Supporting the preparation of high-quality technical deliverables, reports, presentations, etc.
- Planning and implementing field-based environmental investigations to collect surface water, sediment, pore water, soil, biological tissue, and/or biological community samples.
- Documenting field observations and recording necessary data to support multi-media field programs.
- Ensuring field work is conducted in accordance with relevant investigation work plans and in accordance with prescribed DQOs and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Specific Experience and Skills - 0 to 2 years of experience in consulting, with focus in ecological assessment.
- Commitment to a behavior-based safety culture
- Ability to support the implementation of field investigations of surface water, sediment, pore water, soil, and biological communities
- Experience analyzing environmental data, including robust understanding of Microsoft Excel (experience with R or other statistical software is preferred)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and data quality
- Proficiency or understanding of global positioning system (GPS) units (e.g., Trimble) and other field monitoring equipment (e.g., multi-parameter water quality monitors, data logging instrumentation)
- Ability to think critically and conceptually about environmental data and develop statistical approaches to support project objectives
- Proficiency in standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and statistical software packages (e.g., ProUCL, R)
- Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and software packages (e.g., ArcGIS)
- An understanding of regulations and guidance for remedial investigations and risk assessment under state and federal programs (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, Voluntary)
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients and co-workers
Education and Licenses - Bachelor's or Master's in biology, chemistry, geochemistry, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
