Environmental Engineer - (Water & Waste) at our integrated pulp and paper mill in
Clatskanie, OR. The Environmental Engineer provides leadership and strategic direction to the mill's environmental programs and drives performance improvement through efficient, effective, and sustainable programs. This position reports to the mill Environmental Manager and creates value for the organization by ensuring compliance is maintained and risk is identified and mitigated. Long-term value is created through the application of our Principle Based Management™ business philosophy.
The Environmental Engineer is a multi-media role in the water and waste programs. The role will be a key player in the development, implementation, and management of the facility's drinking water, stormwater and wastewater compliance programs and management systems. You will also be a key player in the development, implementation, and management of the facility's solid and hazardous waste compliance programs and management systems.
Our Team The Environmental Engineer will be supported by local mill Environmental resources and a cross-media regional support team. You will regularly interact with peers at the Camas WA and Halsey OR facilities. These interactions ensure consistency in the compliance programs and provide opportunities to share best practices.
The Wauna mill, it's 800+ team members, and products are a critical part of GP's Consumer Products portfolio. The site manufactures high-profile Angel Soft®, Sparkle® and Vanity Fair® brands. GP has invested heavily at Wauna in recent years to deliver competitive tissue and towel products, including a new tissue paper converting machine and palletizing robotics. The mill also features a recent $150M investment rebuilding a paper machine, to further the mill's competitive position. Located 1 hour North of Portland, the mill is nestled in outskirts of Astoria, OR and Clatskanie, OR. Oregon serves as a major attraction for outdoor lifestyles including hiking, mountains, or summer beach time.
What You Will Do- Provide leadership and strategic direction related to the mill's water/wastewater and solid and hazardous waste programs consistent with our Stewardship & Compliance Principle to achieve our Vision
- Develop and maintain an evergreen point of view of environmental risks, priorities, key issues, and strategic plans as it pertains to the mill's water/wastewater and solid and hazardous waste program
- Lead and support business permitting efforts and track emerging issues
- Fulfil regulatory compliance obligations in a disciplined manner that leverages technology enablers, common processes, and best practices from across the enterprise
- Systematically drive the environmental programs to be more resilient, effective, consistent, verifiable, and efficient (structured and principled vs. rule based)
- Build solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including regulatory agencies
- Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of mill processes and their impact on environmental performance that allows the facility to enable our operations teams to meet their environmental obligations
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications) - Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or Pulp and Paper Science
- Three (3+) or more years of environmental regulatory experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Experience leading projects, people, and/or teams
- Experience in developing and maintaining environmental compliance reports
What Will Put You Ahead- Experience in leading water/wastewater environmental programs in a large manufacturing environment with emphasis on Activated Sludge Treatment System
- Experience maintaining Small Quantity Generator status in a manufacturing environment
- Experience with developing and improving strategic plans related to water/wastewater and waste programs
- Integrated Pulp and paper process and regulatory knowledge (NPDES, Stormwater, SPCC, RCRA, Industrial Landfill and USACE programs)
- Experience in potable water system compliance
- Experience with Oregon air, water, and waste environmental regulations (including State Fire Marshall Reporting)
- Experience with Industrial Solid Waste Management
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.)
