This position reportsto the Community Garden Outreach Coordinator. This position is specificallyfocused on working in the Native Community Garden. This garden was planned anddesigned by the northern Colorado Native Community for Native community usethus requires that this gardener is also from the Native community.
TheNative Community Garden was created out of an expressed need for more access tospace to grow and harvest ceremonial, medicinal and food plants, it is also ademonstration and learning space. In addition to working in the physicalgarden, this position will work closely with the Native community, coordinatingvolunteer days, supporting classes and making sure the garden is meeting theneeds of the community.
Thisposition seeks a member of the Native community, willing and able to workindependently and proactively, is comfortable in a fast-paced, evolvingenvironment, and is looking for professional experience and training in allaspects of food sovereignty and food production from soil preparation toplanting and harvesting. Work hours are flexible based on schedule, withtypical work hours being 20 hours per week Monday through Friday with someweekend meetings.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Gardens on SpringCreek is the community botanic garden of Fort Collins. It is a City of FortCollins facility with a non-profit partner, the Friends of the Gardens onSpring Creek. The mission of The Gardens is to enrich the lives of people andfoster environmental stewardship through horticulture. The Friends of theGardens supports The Gardens through fundraising and advocacy.
Thefacility includes a Visitor's Center, Butterfly House and 12 acres ofgardens. A detailed description of theGardens on Spring Creek and its programs can be found at www.fcgov.com/gardens.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: -Assist with various gardening tasks including but not limited to seeding, transplanting, watering, irrigation system maintenance and repair, weeding, mulching, pruning, deadheading and harvesting
-Use of machinery and equipment such as rototillers, string trimmers, and hedge trimmers; various hand tools such as shovels, digging forks, trowels, hoes, and pruners
-Assist in the implementation of Native Community Programming for the Native Community including demonstrations, harvesting days and community meetings.
-Frequently respond to the needs of visitors at the Gardens on Spring Creek
-Leading and supporting native community volunteer groups
-Administrative and record keeping tasks
-Inventory and organize supplies
-May assist with The Gardens' special events if interested
-Operates City vehicles and equipment both on and off-site

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:• At least 18 years old
• Valid driver's license and good driving record
• Gardening and landscaping experience required
• Willing and able to do strenuous physical work in a productive and efficient manner
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral or schedule form
• Self-directed, responsible, and uses good judgment
• Works well as part of a team and individually
• Present a positive image while working in public settings
• Physical, mental, and cognitive abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties outlined above

Working Hours:Scheduleflexibility during the work week (Monday through Sunday), work hours completedwithin the 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. time frame. Occasional weekend watering duty andcommunity meetings are required.
Working Conditions:-Schedules may vary from part-time to full-time and may include weekends, and holidays
-The employee will work outdoors in a variety of conditions
-Will wear proper safety gear including, but not limited to, safety-toed boots, safety glasses and ear protection as required
May attend weekly staff meetings and safety meetings as scheduled
City of Fort Collins works together with staff to prevent the spread of germs (COVID, etc.) to maintain a clean, safe environment
Physical Demands:Theemployee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, dig, and usehands, arms and legs to operate gardening tools and equipment. The employee is regularly required to liftand carry 20-40 pounds; and occasionally lift objects up to 50-60 lbs.
