The City of Monroe has a population of 36,392, and is the county seat of Union County. The historic Victorian Courthouse, built in 1886, sits magnificently atop a central square and draws attention from every direction. To the north lie County and City government buildings - to the south, quaint downtown shops, restaurants and businesses. Several fountains and small park areas are part of the downtown landscape. A thriving Highway 74 Corridor is where most major restaurants, hotels, and shopping are found. The City of Monroe is also home to the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport.
The City of Monroe operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council sets policies and enacts ordinances, which are carried out under the City Manager's direction. The City Council is comprised of an elected Mayor and six council members. The City has approximately 500 Full-time and 200 Part-Time employees within the following department: Administration, Communications and Tourism, Downtown and Facilities Maintenance, Economic Development, Energy Services, Engineering, Finance, Fire Department, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police Department, and Water Resources.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs intermediate skilled work in a variety of maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of projects and tasks at the Monroe Aquatics and Fitness Center; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Performing skilled and semiskilled maintenance and repair work in painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry, roofing and related trades. Checks and makes repairs to both the main facility and outdoor water park. Performs rough and finished carpentry; builds shelving and cabinets. Repairs wooden structures and equipment such as doors, door locks, windows, roofs, walls, floors, benches, desks, chairs, fences, counter tops as well as some fitness equipment repairs. Makes plumbing repairs, replaces commodes, repairs leaks, clogged up lines, etc. Builds cabinets, bookcases or props for special events. Replaces tile and replaces window panes as needed. Prepares and paints interior and exterior of buildings, tables, benches, shelters, etc. Installs and replaces electrical equipment or wiring, breakers, switches, controls, motors and light sources. Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of carpentry and other skilled trade(s); general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the trades; skill in the use of tools and equipment associated with the skilled trades; ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in building maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Willing to obtain first-aid, CPR AED certifications. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
