Job Details:
  • Start Dates: April & May 2025
  • Duration: Temporary for six months from the date of hire
  • Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Responsibilities:

  • Mowing, edging, and weeding
  • General grounds care and maintenance
  • Assisting with landscape enhancement projects

  • No prior experience required—just a strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn
  • Must have good attendance and enjoy working outdoors

BASIC FUNCTION
   To perform a variety of routine groundskeeping tasks and assist in general maintenance work.

Job Duties

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 
  1. Mows, edges, trims, waters, and fertilizes lawns.
  2. Weeds flower beds; trims trees and plants; waters and fertilizes a variety of flowers, plants, shrubs and trees. 
  3. Sweeps, rakes, and picks up trash from grounds; cleans plugged outdoor drains as necessary.
  4. Operates and maintains yard equipment such as mowers, edgers and vacuums; cleans, lubricates, adjusts and performs minor repairs. 
  5. Operates and repairs sprinkler systems; replaces sprinkler heads, pipes and valves as necessary. 
  6. Removes snow from sidewalks, patios and parking garage roof; as­sists skilled and semi-skilled workers with a variety of mainte­nance activities during the winter season. 
  7. Performs duties of the Gardener in his/her absence. 
  8. Serves as lead worker over temporary help or work release in­mates as required. 
  9. Performs related duties as required.
     

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
 
     One (1) year of experience in commercial gardening or yard care; OR, any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Must pass job related tests.
 
 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
     A valid State of Washington Driver's License is required for employment.
 
     Possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid Card within ninety (90) days of employment is required.

     Candidates for employment may be required to pass a pre-­employment physical examination prior to being hired.

Knowledge of: 
  • the basic methods, materials and equipment used in commercial gardening and routine maintenance work;
  • the hazards associated with the work;
  • safety rules and regulations;
  • basic first aid methods and procedures. 
     
Ability to:  
  • identify and care for a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers and plants;
  • use a wide variety of hand and power tools skillfully and safely;
  • perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on gardening and other equipment;
  • perform strenuous physical work;
  • read and understand the labels on fertilizers and other gardening supplies;
  • understand and follow oral and written instruction;
  • read, understand and follow safety rules and regulations;
  • establish and maintain effective work relationships with superiors and co-workers;
  • deal courteously and tactfully with the general public. 
     
PHYSICAL EFFORT
 
     The work involves a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing more than seventy-five (75) pounds.

 
SUPERVISION
 
     Employees report to Facility Maintenance Supervisor or Gardener as assigned. The work is routine and recurring in nature and may be spot checked to ensure timely completion and compliance with instructions, procedures and standards. Specific instructions are given for unusual or non-routine tasks. Employees serve as lead workers as necessary.

 
WORKING CONDITIONS
 
     The work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather at work sites throughout the county. Employees are exposed to a variety of hazards such as dust, fumes, sprays, chemicals and inclement weather. Employees are required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary. The reporting work site may change to various locations in the county during the week.

Healthcare Premiums
  • Regular full-time employees: If you work 35 or more hours per week, you will pay these monthly premiums for medical insurance. The County pays the monthly premiums for vision, dental, and basic life insurance.
  • Regular part-time employees: If you work between 20 and 34 hours per week, you will pay pro-rated monthly premiums for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. The County's contribution toward the premium for an employee in a regular part-time appointment will be pro-rated in an amount equal to the F.T.E. percentage the employee is assigned.
