Position currently qualifies for a telework option.  Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.


The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs.  The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. The N.C. Forest Service is charged by state law to provide for the prevention and control of forest fires in any and all parts of the state.  This position does have fire control and emergency response duties.


The position supervises and develops the Forest Fire Control and Emergency Response, and Forest Health programs on a state level in the NCFS.  The position serves as a member of the Assistant Commissioner’s leadership team providing support and expertise in the operation of the Forest Service.  


The position reviews and develops policies, procedures, and standards for programs along with review of General Statutes and Administrative Code.


This position supervises 2 high level positions in Fire Control and Forest Health.   Forest Supervisor III and Forest Supervisor II, respectively.


This position is responsible for the management of federal grants in the 2 program areas.  This position serves as the sponsor of several NCFS committees such as the Equipment Committee and State Initial Attack Committee.


This position serves as the lead for cooperative agreements and memorandums of agreements on matters relating to the 2 program areas under their supervision.


This is classified as an Exempt Managerial position (§ 126-5(b)) and is not subject to § 126-35.

Duty Station: Archdale Building 512 North Salisbury Street, Raleigh NC 27604.


Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday-Friday. Some work will require evening, holiday, and weekend work. The NC Forest Service is the State of NC lead on wildland emergency response and fire suppression and is a member of the State Emergency Response Team.  There is overnight travel required and at times may be extended days of 16+/- depending on situation; required On-Call status, 7days/week during periods of high fire danger or impending natural disaster.

  • Program management experience in Safety, Administration, Forest Management and Forest Protection including planning, implementation, and review phases.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written formats.
  • Supervisory experience reflecting strong technical knowledge of good supervisory practices, including coaching and mentoring staff, and evaluating performance.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to manage complex dilemmas and to anticipate, recognize, and respond to problematic situations.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Qualified or Trainee Complex Incident Command & General Staff member.
  • Knowledge of Federal Grants applicable to Forest Protection
  • NRLI, L-480 or other comparable leadership training

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.


Bachelor s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and eight years of experience in a forestry program to include two years of supervisory experience; or registered by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Foresters and eight years of professional post-registration experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Necessary Special Requirement 
Those not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within one year of employment.
