Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 located in Soldotna!What you will be doing:Are you looking for a great opportunity to expand your skillset and conduct diverse fisheries research on the Kenai River and surrounding areas with the most popular sport fisheries in the state? If so, here's your chance! This position will have the unique first in the state opportunity to conduct tagging and acoustic tracking studies of juvenile Kenai River Chinook salmon using state of the art JSATS (Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System) technology. This long term non-permanent position serves as a research biologist for those studies and will have other fisheries research and analysis opportunities.
Our organization, mission, and culture: Job duties serve the Department's objective to perform objective research that supports sport fisheries management. This position plans, designs, conducts, analyzes, and summarizes data to meet information needs such as for management of Kenai River Chinook salmon. In addition, a variety of work also helps to support management of other Northern Kenai Peninsula sport fisheries, such as those for rainbow trout, coho salmon, and sockeye salmon. This position will research Kenai River Chinook salmon juveniles and will design and conduct other interesting analyses.

The working conditions you can expect:This position is based in the City of Soldotna, Alaska. Daily work routines are generally self-directed under the oversight of the Division of Sport fish area research supervisor. Activity includes supervising a seasonal fisheries biologist and technicians, conducting and supervising fieldwork, and equipment preparation and maintenance during the year. Fieldwork will be conducted on an as needed basis. Office duties occur throughout the calendar year and are most prevalent during the winter months where duties focus on planning, developing project budgets, conducting data analysis, collaborating with collogues and authoring reports and preparing operational plans for the coming year.
Who we are looking for:We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledgeable and experience with fish stock assessments and sampling methods.
- Experience operating boats equipped with outboard motors on rivers capable of troubleshooting outboard motor or other mechanical equipment issues in the field.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills (i.e. experience writing reports/manuscripts, project proposals/ operational plans, giving presentations.
- Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills; experience designing and conducting research projects and managing large data sets.
- Strong organizational, supervision, and team building skills.

Minimum QualificationsA bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
