The primary focus of this position will be designing and implementing research projects to answer management driven questions. This includes being able to coordinate with stakeholders such as universities, other government agencies, and NGO's to ensure that proper permitting and applications are completed. Additionally, sound statical analysis of collected data will be a vital responsibility to ensure that defendable, justifiable, and publishable results are generated from projects. Furthermore, this position will assist with management activities on both lotic and lentic waters, statewide spawning efforts, and public outreach and education. Some travel, to conduct field work and attend in-state and out-of-state meetings, is required. Night and weekend work may also be required for field work activities.
The incumbent needs to have the ability to work in both office and field environments, often in less than ideal weather conditions.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid drivers license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: M.S. degree in fisheries ecology and management or related field is preferred. Candidates with demonstrated written and oral communication and analytical skills are preferred. Applicant must be highly motivated, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and be physically capable and willing to work long hours in demanding outdoor conditions.
Knowledge of:
- principles used in the management of wildlife and fish populations;
- research, laboratory, and statistical methods as they relate to wildlife and fisheries management;
- interaction among the public, resource management agencies, and wildlife and fisheries resources;
- basic principles and terminology of data processing;
- fish marking and tracking methods including radio telemetry, acoustic, PIT, and visual tags;
- principles of effective human relations and dealing with the public.
Skill to:
- develop program priorities, goals, and objectives through strategic planning;
- develop, justify, and allocate research projects and associated budgets;
- manage data systems to ensure sound data integrity.
Ability to:
- organize and analyze available information and draw sound conclusions;
- write clearly and concisely and in logical sequence;
- favorably present and promote departmental priorities, services, and actions;
- effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines;
- budget monetary, material, and equipment resources;
- communicate information clearly and concisely;
- lift up to 60 pounds.
