Who we're looking forToyota's Carbon Neutrality & Regulatory Affairs Division is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Regulated Reporting Implementation Principal Engineer.
The primary responsibility of this role is to implement and coordinate Toyota's regulatory obligations for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements and chemical regulated reporting.
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Implementation, the person in this role will support the Chemical & Materials Stewardship department's objective to provide regulatory expertise and coordinated enterprise compliance validation and reporting for TMNA's chemicals, materials, and packaging.
What you'll be doing Implementation and coordination of Toyota's regulatory obligations for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements and chemical regulated reporting, including but not limited to:
- Complete coordination and leadership of TMNA's data procurement, and report development / timely submission of highly-complex, multi-faceted regulated reports on chemical usage to government agencies. Key examples include large family groups of chemicals, such as PFAS, that are used in 10s of thousands of vehicle parts and in a wide variety of operational equipment. Span of engagement includes 10-15 divisions, incl. TMC.
- Complete coordination and leadership of TMNA's obligations as a "Producer" in recently enacted EPR laws and regulations for product packaging in U.S. states (6 states have comprehensive laws on the books, with 5~10 more states now promulgating laws). The EPR approach will expand to products beyond packaging, including batteries, which will also become part of this position's responsibility (in collaboration with battery engineer and other divisions).
- Represent TMNA and collaborate with 3rd Party PRO (Producer Responsibility Organization) which serves as the intermediate between Producers and States in EPR regulated frameworks; as well as conduct all needed annual financial accounting and manage TMNA's fiduciary responsibility to the PRO (estimated to be in the 10s to 100s of thousands of dollars each year, to each state);
- Engage and strategize with TMNA and supplier engineers to develop future uses of recycled materials in our packaging and components.
- Engage and strategize with CNRA's new Circularity and EPR Advocacy Engineer, providing feedback on most effective EPR implementation approaches.
- Establish required gov't. agency relationships to represent TMNA with credibility and trust.
- Collaborate with TMNA OneTech to develop any needed data collection / management systems for these required report submissions.
What you bring - Bachelor's degree in related engineering discipline
- 10 years of professional work experience including but not limited to engineering fields and processes such as chemical and materials management or materials waste management, including reuse and closed-loop recycling
- Strong, demonstrated project management capabilities for highly complex, multi-year projects across diverse enterprise functions
- Ability to adhere to milestones and timely complete compliance and certification activities and reports
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to use in negotiation, to use to present to higher-level stakeholders across the enterprise, and to advocate for work.
- Exposure to regulatory interpretation and implementation
- Full capability in MS Office suite, including key project management tools, and interest in pursuing further IT tools to enhance the work
- Ability to travel 25% of the time
Added bonus if you have- Experience with 3rd Party Producer Responsibility Organizations (PRO) or municipal / state governmental waste management agencies.
- Master's degree in business administration or engineering
- Experience in automotive engineering or Li-Ion battery engineering or manufacturing
- Bi-lingual skills-Japanese
