Description Burns & McDonnell has an exciting career opportunity for an Associate Environmental Engineer to join our Remediation Department in Texas. We are seeking an experienced and proven leader to expand our remediation practice while continuing to lead the support and management of environmental investigation and remediation projects for clientele within a variety of business sectors including electrical utility, solid waste, manufacturing, oil and gas, renewable energy, and others. The ideal candidate could work from our Austin, Houston or Fort Worth office locations.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will help expand our remediation services and client base in the region. This position requires experience performing and managing all aspects of environmental site assessment and remediation projects from initial site assessments to hydrogeologic investigations, development of conceptual site models, contaminant fate and transport, remedial action design and implementation, etc. Experience with emerging contaminants of concern including PFAS and experience investigating coal combustion residuals (CCR) is strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will lead and support multiple remediation projects as well as manage and complete independent project tasks. Additional responsibilities include initiating or assisting in proposal development, contract negotiations, coordinating project planning, and mentoring junior staff. Project planning tasks include developing scopes of work and schedules, providing technical experience in the development of client deliverables, negotiating with regulatory agencies, managing subcontractors, contracts, schedules, and budgets.
The Associate Engineer will work within our region's Remediation Department and collaborate broadly in support of our Environmental Services Practice to perform the following duties:
- Lead preparation of work plans, investigation reports, feasibility studies, remedial design and implementation in accordance with CERCLA, RCRA, the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP), and other state led programs.
- Act as technical resource and manage site investigation, remedial design and compliance/enforcement projects including responsibility for scope, schedule, budgets and conveyance of high-quality technical deliverables.
- Lead business development activities responding to market trends and technological advances to pursue and grow client engagement in the public and private sector.
- Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
- Apply expert knowledge of commonly used environmental concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the environmental consulting services industry.
- Apply knowledge and experience to complex projects, find non-standard solutions.
- Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
- Responsible for QA/QC process adherence
- Remediation system design and operation, including in-situ remedies, cover systems, recovery and treatment, waste management, etc.
- Deliver desktop assessments, planning, reporting, and execution of construction solutions for successful closure of CCR landfills and surface impoundments.
- Partner with and support the Emerging Contaminants team withing Environmental Services, as well as the multi-divisional PFAS team providing PFAS solutions to clients across all markets, industries, and geographies.
- Establish, build, and maintain relationships with agency personnel, internal Burns & McDonnell customers (in the engineering practices) and external clients.
- Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members and support internal technical training and mentorship programs.
- Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
- Work to effectively balance billable and non-billable time.
- Other duties as required by business line needs.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Civil or related Engineering discipline from an accredited program is required.
- 13 years of related professional experience (20 years preferred).
- PE License in Texas is highly preferred.
- Prior Demonstrated scientific and/or engineering experience delivering TRRP solutions required.
- Expert experience in remediation project delivery.
- Expert experience managing projects, including proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination and communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must be a self-starter, team oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to leverage existing client relationships into future business opportunities is highly preferred.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
- Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
- Must be proficient in the use of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
